I have a Brno 602 in 375 Weatherby. I get 2790feet with a Swift 300grs bullet. I want to by a new barrel in 458WM and make a 458 Lott. The stock and everything else will be the same. Will I manage the recoil? I suppose that the +/-300feet in less velocity will give a different feel of recoil despite of the 500grs bullet. A 300grs in 2790feet feels like a mule kick and not like a push. I felt a big difference form the 375H&H to the 375 Weaterby. I wonder if there is anybody out there who has shot both 375Wed. and 458 Lott and can give me some info on the difference in felt recoil? I suppose I will do most of the fun shooting with a 400grs bullet and use 500-550grs when hunting.

Recoil is very subjective. I have a M70 375 H&H that kicks pretty good. About my limit with it would be 50 shots at the range. My 458 Lott M70 kicks quite a bit more. My limit would be 20 shots at the range. I'm not sure if that answers your question, but it is the best I could do.

Well, I don't have a Lott, but I do have a 375 Wby and a 450 Ackley built on the same type of rifle, and the 450 definately recoils harder. How much harder is hard to say. Maybe half again as hard, I guess. Hope this helps some. - Dan

If you can handle the recoil of a 375 WBY then you can handle a 458 lott. The conversion you describe should be very straight-foreward. I have just finished building a 450 Ackley (pictures posted) and managed to get 2410 fps with 500 gr bullets out of it. My 17 year old son who is 5"11 and weighs 135 lbs shot it and remarked that he thought it kicked less than my .416 Rigby. I agree with this assesment. The stock design on the Mod 70 is excellent and with a low mounted scope the recoil is quite manageable.-Rob

Having used all of the mentioned cartridges I can say without hesitation that a full house loading in the Lott will be much harder to deal with. Also, unless you have elephant hunting planned I would not make the conversion as the 375Wby is far more versatile.

I admit that I have no good reason to change from 375Wed. to 458lott Especially when I live in Norway and have no plans of going to Africa. The thing is that I have a need to have something new and I like to have something that not to many other have decease.

Hi BigBoreNorway,

Sorry that I have no answer to your question, but can I ask you for your loading datas for the .375Wby? I have a CZ 550Magnum rechambered to it and I am still looking for loading datas, especially with 300grs A-Frames or similar bullets.

Thanks in advance.
