I posted this on reloading, but no help.

What pistol powder(s) do you use with big, bottlenecked cartridges shooting low velocity lead loads? I have found data for only two (375HH and 378wby). Someone must have played around with their 458WM or 416Taylor.

Any suggestions? Kudude

Kudude- I'm sure you already know this, but be very very carefull with light loads of fast powders in large volume cases. Thats reported to be the perfect recipe for a detonation. i'd particularily worry about double base powders. Stick with XMP5744 and lead bullets and you'll do fine.

I spent about 15 years thinking lead bullets were the answer to getting lots of cheap rifle practice but of all the loads I tried, a disappointingly few were even useful. Pretty much have given up the cast bullet game for power practice, and most lighter loads for that matter.

XMP5744 worked for me in a .375H&H with RCBS's GCFN but I don't remember the charge. That's the only load in a bottle necked cartridge with any kind of power AND accuracy (but still way below full power). Some of the very light stuff in '06's and .338's were accurate but hardly worth the efforts for the total performance. May as well shoot a .22 and avoid all the hassle.

My .458 Lott has been a different story and I've run at least 2000 350grain cast bullets through it over 20 grains of Universal Clays. Bryce Towsley wrote an article in AmRifleman regarding pistol powders for cowboy action shooting. A common problem there is trying to get a light smokeless load in a capacious case designed for black powder. Towsley said Hodgdon engineered Universal Clays to function well in a case with lots of air space. I've not noticed any difference in velocity whether my .458Lott loads were tipped up, tipped down or whatever before firing. The 20 grains lobs that 360 bullet about 1400 fps, it's a pussycat to shoot in my 9 1/4 rifle, and usually plunks into 2-3moa depending on bullet quality and my shooting.

I've also had great success with RCBS's 405gr FNGC and 65grains of H4895. This bullet usually casts about 420 grains and travels right at 2000fps with good accuracy (2-4moa). Heavier loads usually start leading and accuracy falls off but it gives a decent enough shove to allow a little recoil recovery practice. I don't think I'd go any lighter with this powder anyway. There is some airspace in the case but that RCBS bullet is designed for the .45-70 so a lot of it takes up space in the case.

Lead bullets and handguns are a wonderful combo but getting them to perform in rifles becomes more of a chore than I'm interested in.

This is the best powder for moderate velocity (1300-1800fps) big-bore loads with cast bullets of all weights. Cases do not require a filler either.

My .404 Jeffery (Cogswell and Harrison)and .416 Rigby (Ruger #1) do rather well with cast bullets.

In the .416 I use the RCBS 416-350 bullet, which actually weighs 365 grains in my wheelweight alloy. This bullet groups well at speeds from 1100 fps to over 2500 fps, and I carried it in the form of a two-alloy softpoint load in Alberta last fall...didn't get to try it on game, unfortunately. The softpoint 416-350 was loaded to 2100 fps and grouped three rounds in about one inch at 100 yards. Sighted three inches high at 100, it was zeroed at 170 yards, which gave me 200 yards' effective range by my reckoning.

Just this past weekend I received a new .404 mould from NEI in Texas. EIGHT DAYS between ordering a special-order mould, and its delivery in Nevada!

Reduced loads don't present any problem IF one knows what he's doing.

Go to www.cb.gunloads.com and search on "416" ...there's quite a bit of material there. Also my early work with this new NEI .404 bullet is posted, so search on "404" if interested.

I've found unique works great for 1100-1400 fps loads. In my 500 Jeffrey I use 30 gr and a 470 gr cast for a giant 22 rimfire load 1100 fps and reasonable accuracy.
