What is the easiest way to regulate/sight in "iron sights" on a DGR (in this case it is a 416 Rigby with 400 grain loads at about 2450fps) to reduce the human element. I would like to end up with a ~100 yard zero, but do the "sighting in part" at a closer yardage.

I'd say if you zero it 1" high at 50 yards you'll be just about right at 100 yards. .22 LR Ruger M77/22 30-06 Ruger M77/MkII .375 H&H Ruger RSM

Exactly what 458RugerNo1 said. Best, Starcharvski.

I would also suggest, once you've finished your sighting in, to see where it prints at 25 yards. If something gets close like a cat or a buff it's a good idea to know where the shot will go. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I think a hundred yard zero is kind of long for an iron sighted DGR.

Just so the human element doesn't get eliminated totally, as in stomped, you should also take a look at your ability to sight in on a black target. If buffalo are on your dance card, you may find that you can't pick out the sights worth a darn. I am changing the front sight on my CZ550 in 416 Rigby because on a dark colored target I couldn't see a thing. I'm leaning toward the post front sight with a white line in it. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Wink, a lot of people like the red fiber optic front offered by New England Custom Guns. My friend's PH was so impressed he pulled it off in Africa and gave it to him. The CZ dovetail needs a slight modification but nothing expensive. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Tiggertate, I have asked NECG about a drop-in front sight for the CZ 550 and they say they are considering it. Apparently we will have to wait for them to get back from the IWA in Germany before a decision will be made. I would rather go that route (if it happens) then replacing the front sight ramp completely just because being in France means paying quite a lot for competent smith services. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

All it takes is a new slightly larger dovetail cut into the existing ramp. It can be done in a few minutes on the gun by a competent 'smith. The only downside is (if you want to call it that) you will have to use NEGC blades from there on. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I sight all mine in at one inch high at 50 and they are about the same at 100 yards...but its good to test them at 100 to be sure... Some prefer dead on sight picture at 50 and that may be a good thing as one tends to shoot high in a charge situation..Most PHs like the front sight to cover up the group....I, on the otherhand, like to see my target over the top of the bead. Ray's advice is sound. With the .416 Rigby, you will get the best results by zeroing at around 130 yards. The trajectory of the bullet will not deviate more than one inch from the line-of-sight out to 150 yards, and drops less than 5 inches at 200 yards. Shots at game beyond 150 yards with iron sights are extremely unlikely, so just point and shoot! The Rigby cartridge is a far better mid-range performer than most people think! If your front sight-bead is exactly one inch above the centre of the bore, trajectory and line-of-sight should first cross at 25 yards. This would be a good starting-point. ps: thanks to Point-Blank ballistic software, goes without saying! Marrakai When the bull drops, the bullsh!t stops!

That Point-Blank software looks interesting. I've not yet gotten into computer software for shooting for some reason, but I am interested. Is this one of the better softwares available by chance? .22 LR Ruger M77/22 30-06 Ruger M77/MkII .375 H&H Ruger RSM
