416 Ruger
I recently picked up a mauser 98 action that had been opened up to magnum bolt face. I happen to have a light weight short 416 Shilen barrel. I was thinking about making the two into a 416 Ruger with 20-22" barrel and drop it into a Boyds laminated stock. Should be a fairly straight forward and inexpensive project.

My main question is how the 416 Ruger working out. Is it better than going taylor? How does it feed out of a standard mauser action? It looks like brass and ammo is fairly redily available for it.

Whats everyones opinion of the 416 Ruger.

I like it.. might be because it is a close twin to my 416 Accrel, which I also really like.

feeding, like the taylor, depends on either dumbluck or the skill of the guy doing the feeding...

people sure did complain lots about the wsm/rum rounds when they came out, about how hard they were to feed and wouldn't last for 2 years.. ELEVEN years ago

Hmm the 416 ruger gives you around 13% more capacity and same number of rounds down. No question to me you can load the Ruger down if you want. Plus factory ammo if you need it.

As usual just my $.02

Well, it's got better ballistics than the Taylor, more buzz on forums than the Taylor, doesn't have a rebated rim or fat like the RUMs. I think that Ruger is here to stay and it would be my choice going away with the components you have.

However, the shoulder is wider than the Taylor so your might need to open the rails .01" or work on the follower with a dremel. First build the Ruger.

I had a 416 Taylor and loved it, but the barrel was too long and too heavy, so I took it to the gunsmith to get shortened and fluted but was concerned about loosing too much velocity.

He shortened and fluted it and rechambered it to 416 Ruger, the weight and balance of the rifle is heaps better now and I was able to increase velocity with my reloads and same bullet weight even with the shorter barrel.

In a Mauser 98, I'd have to go 400 Jeffery ...
