If you've shot other big bore revolvers, then the 475 Linebaugh is not a problem. It's just that you must concentrate on holding the toy in a VERY firm grip before you light it off. In an un-ported revolver, the recoil causes about 90-100 degrees of muzzle flip. If you're not careful, you'll end up wearing the front sight on your forehead. The first few rounds I ever shot knocked my hat off my head. I also got my best group ever.

The reason for the Bisley's popularity is that the gripframe is is conducive to less muzzle flip when using warm loads. I guess it takes a side by side comparison to finger that out.

Whats it with the Bisley, gentlemen?

Boha,

I find that the Bisley grip allows me to shoot 'heavy' handloads more comfortably.

When I first started playing around with handguns (about 1967), I came to the conclusion (at that tender yound age) that there was little point in beating one's self with a deer pistol larger than .41 Rem mag.

The first pistol I bought was a M57 Smith. Originally had a 4" tube but I had that replaced by Smith with a 6" tube. Fitted the thing with a Beuhler mount and a 2x Leupold scope years ago.

That bloody gun has spoiled me so badly with its accuracy and effectiveness on deer that I've not spent any serious time fooling around with other hunting pistols. It has killed deer at 125 yards with cast bullets and much much closer too. The Remington 210 Sp load works amazingly well on Bambi.

It'll go into the field once again this year, and I'll never worry about how it will perform. Anything less than perfection will be MY fault!

I've played with the .41 Mag., .454 Casull, .480 Ruger, .500 S&W , etc. But I always keep coming back to the good 'ol .44 Mag.
When things are chasing me I've found the .44 is about as much recoil as I can quickly recover from to stay in combat mode. Also bullets are everywhere and half the people I know are giving away brass.
I carried a .44 Desert Eagle for a while but I've always been the happiest with a good old S&W wheel gun. The actions are so smooth and they last really well for me.
Currently I'm carrying a 3" 629 Trail Boss the most and it's really accurate for a short barrel. The longer sight radius on even the 4" and 6" guns are a lot easier to shoot but that 3" is just so easy to carry.

I have two Super Redhawks, one in .480 Ruger and the other in .454 Casull. Have taken a number of hogs with the .480 and it dispatches them admirably. Still have to try the Casull out on live game.

475Guy -- how do you like your .475?? I've wanted one for a very long time.

Brian,
I've posted a picture of it in the Handguns forum here at AR in the past, but use hunt101.com for image hosting and they seem to have some problems right now. When it comes back up, I'll edit my original post to include an image of it.

7 1/2" Super Redhawk 480. I've been fortunate to fire many different 454's, 475's and 500's, and the 480 is by far my favorite of the lot. Nice big hole, reasonable velocity, but not the punishing recoil.

Ok, I would really like an FA 83 w/ 6" octagon barrel chambered in 480.

The .450 Bonecrusher is sort of a handful, but really not much worse than a .454. It's loaded to a max chamber pressure of 40,000, and at that level, it'll push 350 grain JFPs to 1,700 fps (8" barrel). Now if you really want a punishing handgun, my .500 Martin is the ticket (full length .50 Alaskan necked to .500"). My dad and I have converted two .500 S&W BFRs to the round using the factory 10" barrel. With high-end loads, the recoil is absolutely horrible (I actually split the web of my hand shooting a 690 grain hardcast out of it).

DPhillips, Please do post pictures of your Bowen Redhawk if your able. Mr. Bowen is truly an artist and I always enjoy seeing his work. Below is my Bowen 5-shot bisley in .45 Colt along with regular and souped up .45 ammo.
