I got to go see a buddys new farm, he found that the old owner left stacks of 1 1/4 inch thick plywood cut in 2'x4' pices. First load barnes 505 flat tipped soild 525 grs 141 grs of rl25 I stacked 20 and shot straight through (that's 25 inches). I added 10 more to the stack and fired twice. Both rounds were found in the 24th piece, one third of the way through. Thats 30 inches of solid wood. No damage to either bullet noted. load 2 470 nitro 45 grs of 5744 500 gr gas ck found side ways 1/2 way through the 15th board, some tip damage. Lood 3 470 nitro 500 grs woodleigh soft 86 grs of rl 15 The woodleigh turned inside out and did lots of damage and tracked fairly straight. I could not get them out of the board. Thanks for sharing the data. What barrel make and/or twist on the .505 Gibbs? What barrel make and/or twist on the 470 Nitro? Low velocity 470 NE load with hard cast lead boolit? Your standard velocity 470 NE Woodleigh soft load: Bullet pancaked and did not go far? About how many inches of that plywood to stop the soft?

Interesting. I shot at a Buffalo, 2nd shot on the run, the bullet hit a tree about 1 ft wide (maybe a bit more), went straight through it. .

505 is a Montana barrel. I think its a 1/14 twist and is 21 iniches long. The load acording to barnes loading manual is 2150 fps. The 470 is a chapruis not sure of the twist. The load is a standard and should be about 2100 fps The 470 woodleighs kind of merged, each vered off course just a little and finished next to each other. They opened up on the first board and still went 10 more boards about 12 inches with a large dent in the next 2 or 3 boards. It was hard to tell where they finished. They wer inposible to get out with the tools I had on hand. After the bullet passed through the board it filled up with hard packed spinters from the next board. This is the first time I have seen plywood a 1&1/4 inch thick. Lots of 1/8 inch thick layers ,it was real hard and heavy. Its a special use board of some sort, most likey made for pads for heavy eq or pile driveing or maybe pit lineing. Its been under a shed for a while and slightly damp, but not rotten. There were 2 or 3 stacks of 40 or more board cut 2'X4'. My buddy does't have any use for them and would sell all of it cheap if you could get to tallahassee fla. Given that the woodleigh is a proven buff killer and will just about pass through most buff, I would be real carefull of the tsx flat points on broadside shots at buff in a herd. The the light cast load is a 500 gr hard cast at more fps than you can get out of a 45-70 produceing more engery than the 45-70. I would not be shy of useing it on anything but the largest bears here in the US. Its way more than you need for pigs or deer. IF he keeps the boards next time I come up I will try the tsx and woodleighs in the 505. Just a note my two buddies have not fired anything larger than a 06 before shooting the 470 and the 505. Both rifles are scoped with 1x4 power scopes. No one got scope bite, and both made accurate off hand shots. JD DRSS 9.3X74 tika 512 9.3X74 SXS Merkel 140 in 470 Nitro

Awesome, I'd love to see the results with the TSX. Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

I thought I would post this picture for your info. Uploaded with ImageShack.us The left bullet weighs 384gn the right bullet weighs 434gn. They are both Woodleigh 525gn RNSN shot from my 505 Gibbs and recovered from pigs. Both were angling shots which were stopped by the fighting shield on the far side of the pig. I shot 3 Pigs in this particular hunt but the third bullet passed through. They were all 70kg to 80kg (155 to 175 lb) pigs in good condition probably from raiding nearby crops. These bullets were driven at 2500fps and the shots were all between 30 and 50 yards (one standing and 2 running), and the result was devastating (to the pigs) to say the least. Even though driven 300fps faster than recommended they held together pretty well, retaining 73% and 83% (respectively left to right) of their original weight, and both expanded to about 1 1/4 inches. I have never see pig internals so mushed in my life.

I think those 525 Woodleigh softs would be an excellent leapord bullet. I think I would opt for the 600g PP at about 2150 fps for tougher game. Chuck Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

Excellent pig and leopard bullet, yessirree! Still gotta hit the right spot on either, but no worries for a .505 lover, I reckon. Such a versatile round, eh?

The 525gn bullets are fine if driven at what I would call "normal" velocities". Shot quite a few buffalo with them. When you get "up there", they do really open up on pigs etc and as found, they make mince meat out of the internals. .
