That's a nice looking set up you have there. I can't wait to see what it looks like assembled. What action will you use?

If you don't mind my asking, about how much could a fellow expect to pay for this barrel and sights? I'm thinking I may wish to order this set for the 8x68s I've got in the works.

Looks great!

I have the same barrel and sights in the works right now in both a 9.3x62 and a 7x57. Sure hope to see them from the gunsmith in the next month or so and then I will post pictures of the parts fully assembled.

Do they do a similar style contour for smaller calibers?

That thing looks too cool for school.

Are the sights made especially for this barrel or is there alot of fitting required? What do the barrel and sights cost?

new guy, that's a great looking barrel and will look even better with your sight package. Can you tell me the dimensions on the barrel? Specifically: length, diameter at the steps and muzzle diameter.
Thanks,
Forrest

Both sights come in a variety of diameters - including the rear banded sight with integral recoil lug.

IIRC, the barrel was about $240, and I'm not sure what the sights cost as i haven't purchased them yet, but they are probably in the $100/each range.

The action is nearing completion and the stock blank has already been picked out, so I'll keep you up to date on the progress. Hopefully it's all done before the end of the year.

It's .423.

LW says they took these dimensions off an original mauser barrel in 404.

It's a little on the light side at 2 lbs 12 oz, but of course, that's without the sights too.

With 5 rounds and no scope, I expect it to come in a little under 9.5 lbs.

If you wanted one to weigh more than that, you should definitely tell LW to leave a little more meat on the barrel.

Amazing, but that is the exact set-up I have going for my little stalking rifle that is in the works. Ihave not ordered the rear band yet. What is the part number for it?

My barrel will be crowned at 25 inches.

Yowzer! That is the size barrel I would consider ideal for a 6.75 pound .375 H&H, like the one with a one pound stock in the photo below. That one has a Douglas barrel that is .625" at the muzzle. It will make a poorly balanced .404 Jeffery with a wood stock, unless you put some lead in the forearm to add back some weight. It will be quite lovely if so.

Just measure your barrel (don't guess beforehand). Go to the NECG site. Select the barrel band and hit the drop down menu. Then select the correct size, pay with CC securely and wait 7-10 days.

Easy, peasy, pudding 'n pie.

Ya know,

If one could restrain themselves to use the 404J at the original pressure/velocity, this barrel and a worked over model 98 receiver would make a light, lithe and elegant walk around rifle.

That would be a 14" twist, $255 in stainless versus $233 chrome-moly.

It would be about 0.643" diameter at the 24" mark, given 0.625" at the 26" length, LW Mauser.

A lively 10.75x68mm or 10.75x73mm that would be.

How about one of those in stainless for a flyweight .404 Dakota on a Ruger M77 MkII stainless?

If not, my fourth McGowen 10" twist .423 caliber barrel will be on the way, though I would choose a muzzle diameter of 0.675" at 24" for it, don't ya know, and expect a 7 pound .404 Dakota Ruger to deliver 400 grainers at 2400 fps.

I know what I like.

The LW Holland&Holland contour is 0.650" diameter at the 26" length, so about 0.677" at the 24" crown.

RIP - That's what I thought when I opened the box and first saw the barrel!

I'm still a little skeptical myself, but I double checked the dimensions and it is what was used on the original Oberndorf 404s… maybe they knew something we don’t?

We’ve guessed it at a little over 9 pounds, but are going to weigh all of the components and give the balance of the gun some detailed thought before screwing and gluing it all together. If after that it needs a heavier barrel, well then we’ll just have to order another one… a little heavier.

Like a good double, I want the weight between the hands as much as possible, and the thin muzzle may help keep the weight off of the front sight. Then again, it may just be too light out front.

The idea is that this is to be a 9.5 lb 2150 fps gun, not a 10.5 lb 2400 fps gun.

This is exactly what I want too! My next rifle and a great combo between the 40 cal, velocity and weight.

Maybe the Recknagel hardware will be enough to balance it, eh?

Just for yuks, here is some very poor photography with the only (cheap) camera I could find at the moment. This is a .510 caliber stainless McGowen barrel (10" twist) with a 1.320" diameter "lump" left on the barrel, which is 28" long and 0.820" diameter at the end. The beginnings of a .500 Mbogo RIPoff, or a darn fine tent peg Wink:

That E pattern barrel was originally for 40 cal and higher and as you said, will make for a substantial looking 6.5. I like the idea, too.

I have one coming any day in 30 cal, 20" long for a Mannlicher style. LW reduced the diameter coming off the island boss a few thousandths but maintained the same taper to the muzzle to reduce the overall weight. I'll post a pic as soon as it gets here. This one will be a 30-40 Krag on a slant-box Rigby transitional Mauser '98.

I am having another 404 Jeffery built with an eye to lightness. It is very hard to get someone to build a light contour barrel for a boomer. I have tried 5 times to get a walk around Jeffery weighing in at 7.5 lbs without a scope. I have ordered such a rifle 5 times and never got any closer than 9.5 lbs. I am hoping this 22" rifle will get it done. I recently saw a 10.75x68 in poor condition that weigh about 8 lbs that was nice feeling in the hand as well as being light enough to carry all day. With a great set of rings and quick off bases the rifle would do very well.

I can't wait to see this one when it's put together.

The LW barrel patterns pictured look so classy. Don't they make ideas just spin in your head?!

lb404, I'm trying to put together a "light" 416 Rigby, but my target is 9.5 lbs. 7.5 lbs in a big bore I think falls into the ultra-light catagory - I get a twitch just thinking about it.

Your Wiebe 7x57 provided much of the inspiration and motivation to do this. With my limited craftsmanship it won't look like a Wiebe but it will owe its existence to him.
