I am in the process I building an 500-A2, I am trying to my ducks in a row. Can any one tell me about how to set up the chamber for shooting military surplus bullets. I think these type of bullets will be 95% of the bullets that I will shoot and I want the most out the rifle with these.I will be using a enfield action (1917 winchester) it will be a single shot. Is there any oddities, or tricks with this action that I should know about

Welcome to the Forums.
You'll find that you will get tons of advice on this project, and most of it good. Read the post on Ming's 500 Ninja for a really good primer on exactly what you asked for.
The p-17 is big enough, but you will find that it's lots of work to make it look presentable.

Are you yourself a gunsmith, or will you be farming out the work? If the later, I am going to suggest that you either 1: buy a cz550 in 416 rigby and rebarrrel, or 2: buy an olympic arms action, and barrel. The final cost of the action will be the same, but the cz will provide you with a FUNCTIONAL stock. Both are ~600 bucks. http://www.olyarms.com/bbk.html

cheers, and have fun. remember, you will not be able to get BMG ballastics, but you can have fun.

My suggestion? get the gun weight to AT LEAST 12 pounds, and no brake.

A forumite named DaggaRon has a reamer that will do just exactly what you want for 50 BMG bullets. Search for one of his posts and email him.

The action is all ready to go. I have ordered the reamer from midway, and I have a 28' barrel. What I wanted to know is how much extra freebore so it will shoot military bullets. I am not a gunsmith, but I have been working on guns for myself for a long time, so fare so good. This is the first big bore.

I don't know if this helps but Clymers website lists the 50 BMG with .25" freebore and the 50 BMG Match with .13" freebore.

The 500 A2 with 0.400" standard freebore will do nicely for ball and AP milsurp bullets seated on their crimping cannelures. If you want to seat the Hornady A-Max 750 grainer out as far as possible (COL 4.76") then you could use up to 0.588" of total throat: freebore plus leade. This can be done with a throating reamer and the standard 500 A2 reamer.

See the 500 Ninja thread for the 510 JAB throat.
