I recently purchased a CZ550 fancy grade straight stock 458wm and got it reamed to 458lott, front site moved back and muzzle brake attatched for an unbelievable AU$345 (US$269) which included the brake in the price. It is in another shop until next week getting glass bedded and 2 cross bolts put in it but that cost me AU$310 (US$242).
Anyway I am trying to decide what type of scope to put on it. I'm thinking of a low power leupold VX-II or VX-III but would like to hear some recommendation from those who have experience with big bores as this is my first.

Joughin,

Congrats on the purchase, sounds like ya did pretty good. I’ve had a Leupold VX-III 1.75X6 on two 458 Lott’s and one 416 Rigby. The scope held up fine over several hundred full house rounds from all three guns. The only thing I didn’t like about the variable was at 6X it did not have enough eye relief for me (I am a long necked gangly stock crawler and factory stocks LOP don’t fit me well). I could never shoot with it when the magnification was over 4X.

Hence, I switched to low/fixed power scopes. I switched to the Leupold M8 2.5X, its very rugged, simple, and has plenty of eye relief. I bought two and they’ve been on every thing from 350 rem mags all the way up to 458 Lott and will soon come to rest on a 505 Gibbs.

What type of rings do you plan on using? Because I did have some problems with the above 2.5X when mounted with Warne rings. The crosshairs of the scope would move whenever the rifle was dry-fired? I sent the scope back to Leupold and they said it was fine. They told me that they’ve also had problems with Warne rings and advised me not to use them. I don’t know if this is BS or not, but I’m going to use Talley rings when I mount the scope on my 505.

I’m not an optics expert by any means, just sharing my experiences. There are a lot of smart guys on here that can offer expert advice.

Best of Luck with your new toy….

Matt V.

I really like the 1.5-5 Leupold IR scope for big rifles. Have one that is on a CZ in .416 RIGBY and will be used as a spare for a .458 AR. The primary scope for the .458 will be a 2.5x Leupold Compact as it is known to be very, very hardy in high recoil environments.

As I had set it up for deer hunting I had a 4x Burris short mag scope on my CZ 458 Lott it was very good and has around 5" eye releif..'''' It is now on my wifes 308 ........The old 3x leupold scope is great and the 2.5x leupold is very good I have had a 1-4 leupold on my 458 and other rifles for more than 12 years ... It won,t hold zero as of this fall,, but I think that is more from sudden impacts with steel boat ramps , rocks,,,trees , logs , 4 wheeler racks....concrete floors, and the deck of my skiff ,than the more than 4000 rounds of 338 win 416 taylor and 458 win mag ammo it has rode on top of.....I think it could be said that it is a good scope.....Straight tube scopes are easier to lug around also.......When I send it to Oregon I will have them put a morebold reticle in it ..I want to try the 1-4x Euro Diamond scope ............

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I have used both a VX3 1.75-5 and a VX2 1-4 on my 458 Lott. Several hundred rounds and no problem. I appreciate the long eye relief compared to some others that may have a bit better glass but too close to the eye. JMHO

I have had the same work done to my cz .458 win mag (a few years ago now) and I have gone with a compact 2.5x leupold................I have put a couple of hundred through it with know drama's. Those scopes hold up well, I also have another on a .585 Nyati and no problems there either.

Thanks guys, I'm going down the gun shop today to have a look at a couple of those scopes. I'm mostly going to use it for pigs with 300gr pills but I am planning a buffalo hunt up near Oenpelli in the Northern Territory this year as soon as the wet seasons over.
Hopefully all it will cost me is the flight as some friends live out there and do a bit of shooting themselves. They said said it shouldn't be a problem to get a couple of buff and heaps of pigs so I'm looking forward to it.

Another vote for Burris Euro Diamond units. Have them on a bunch of hard recoiling rifles and handguns and haven't had one break or even shift POI. They all had Posi-loc feature though.

I would suggest either the 1-4x or 1.5-6x units. Reasonably priced, too.
