dgr416what to make old Ruger 77 into
Its a 7 mm mag and I have 274 and i make cases for it from 7 mm rem mag so I dont want to mix uop cases.I keep thinking of a 416 ruger but not sure if cases are going to be made that much.I love tang safety bolt guns I hate model 70 and 700 safetys.I have used old ruger 77 in 338 30 years love it just want bigger gun.i already have 416 rem mag so I want 416 caliber but the big remington wont fit.I think this would me awesome gun.I know i wopuld have to add cross bolts to stock or something to keep it from breaking!

farbedoGo for the 416 Ruger. Case availability is good, and will be looking forward. Even if you have to neck up .375 brass, you'll have brass to shoot. If you don't mind a wildcat, the .416 Taylor is a great round, but the Ruger really makes it obsolete IMO.
Feeding will have to be looked at. It may be OK as is, may need a mag box, may need rail work. I don't think it will be that hard to get worked out though.
The stock should have at least one crossbolt behind the recoil lug, and the action should be glass bedded. Relieve the wood at the tang, and at the back of the rear ring. It doesn't need to be relieved much.
Should be a neat rifle.

jeffeossothe 416 rem WILL fit ... just requires a new magbox and MIGHT need bolt stop adjustment.

MARK H. YOUNGdrg416,
As suggested a 416 Taylor or 458 WM would give you a big bore with minimum work and money.

Idaho Sharpshooterthe easy answer: 458 Win Mag.
a bit more work and expense: 458 Lott or 470 Capstick.
I keep thinking one of these days I need to build a Capstick, the same power as my old 470 NE double, but a L-O-T less $$$ and work involved.

I question if it would be 'a bit more money' for 470C or 458 lott? The tang safety gun has a Win Mag length action. They are also infameous for breaking the stock at the tang. Beside the action work, which my guess is would not be simple, you have the need for a new magazine box and a new or reworked stock. Better to either buy a RSM or if you are the OP or me... use the 458WM!

Omnivorous_BobI made a 375H&H on a stainless M77 action and the work was minimal (a few hours tops+mag box and follower)to get it to feed 3.600" roundnoses and spitzers. Any longer and I think the bolt stop would indeed have to be relocated.
