.700 AHR, .685? Login/Join

Sent an email but haven’t got a response yet but figured maybe someone here will know.

With .700 being..well as “standard” as that big a caliber can be, why did AHR choose to go with an oddball .685? Was it different for difference sake? Or to increase the SD just that little bit more to improve penetration?
Keen to hear the reason.
Cheers,
Troy.

It was the biggest bullet they could get in the action and have enough case taper to reliably extract. The limiting factor is the action diameter.
.700 is only sort of standard if you take my meaning. It is only used in the 700 H&H Nitro Express and wildcats that just had to use the .700. It can be used as well as in some 14 bore rifles but they are few and far between. I had CEB make me raptors and solids in .700 a few times in the last 5 years. They tell me I am the only person to ever order them, not a lot of .700s out there. I am apparently the second person to order the .685 bullet. Based on that alone .685 is more standardSmiler

Like I said, as standard as .700 could be :P

Any chance of pics of your .700’s? I’ve only seen Maximus and Grey Ghost for the AHR’s.

Cheers,
Troy.

Heard back from Wayne. You pretty much nailed the explanation, cheers.

Wayne - seems a lot of people have issues with ymail. Think I’ll be changing to a different email place. Cheers all Smiler

I am the current owner of Maximus so you have seen that one and I have a Searcy 700 I can send pics of in a few days after I get home from gator hunting. I will search my phone and see if I can find anything in the meantime.

Thank you. Appreciate it! Would love to see more of Maximus also, as well as details on weight and sighting arrangement please Big Grin

Honestly do appreciate it. Any plans of hunting with either (or if you have, I’d love to hear the stories)

Cheers,
Troy.
