I took a couple of pieces of 2x4 and screwed them together in an "L" shape, then added a 45deg brace. I C-clamp this to the shooting range roof upright post, then put a sand bag over it to rest my arm on. Cheap, quick and it works great for me.

The Lead Sled will not have the same barrel time, recoil dynamics as shooting from the shoulder. Dave

I have a standing bench, from an oldtime camera platform. I added a bigger base structure, more weight to base, and it cranks up and down.Plat form is 15 in wide and 4 ft long.Use a weighted tripod locked to barrel for all load an chrono testing..Ed

I have a bench that's tall enough that if I drop down on my right knee and sight the rifle I'm in an upright position - which is the point of the standing bench for heavy-recoiling rifles... Put sandbags under it and it's good to go. Both my .458's are easy to shoot in this way with full power 500gr loads.

I've thought of the same thing. On the other hand, a "lead sled" would have the same effect, i.e. reducing felt recoil, and would save having to construct something else.

I am considering building a standing bench and I would like your input. Has anyone built such a bench for big bores and are they worth the time and effort in construction? Are there any pitfalls or key points I should consider in the design? It must be adjustable for height as well as have some "front to back" type adjustment for different sized shooters. Currently, I am thinking of some sort of portable version that could sit on top of the benchs already at the gun clubs I belong to. Other than that I'd really like to hear what others have done. I would think this sort of bench would be just the ticket to make all manor of bench time and load development a much more pleasant experince... Page #233 of Boddington's African Experience has a bench similar to what I am referring to and looks like it would serve my purpose very well. Your thoughts? Regards, Dave

The only thing I will not shoot from a bench is a 600 Nitro Express or above. I am very happy to shoot 500 nitro or 585 nyati from the bench, so I am not convinced a standing bench is needed.

I heartily agree with Bruce on the van, great investment.Keeps MOST of my accessories in one place, only need grab ammo and guns of the day. Concerning the Standing rest.I aquired a stand from a broken shop light that held two halogen lights. Adjustable in height and very capable of rising to the proper height for shooting my big boomers, the 500,416's and 458's. I attached a front rest bag to the top plate using a couple of nylon zips and it folds up neatly and stows in the van easily. I will hunt for a pic and post it later if requested.
