JCS271Have you chrono'd your 375 or 416 Ruger (H factory rds)
I have both the .375Ruger and .416Ruger in the Alaskan model. Have any of you chronographed the actual speed of the Hornady DGS or DGX out of the 20" Alaskan barrels. Just wondering what the real world numbers are.
P.S. What about through the 23" Ruger African model, how much difference in the extra 3 inches?

jeffeosso416 chronoed factory ammo, 20" barrel
http://www.realguns.com/archives/172.htmquote:
The Alaskan 20" barrel, 4" shorter, still produced an average velocity of 2369 fps with solids and 2349 with expanding tip bullets; only 31 and 51 fps less, respectively, with a much shorter barreled gun.
numberous reports of the suposed 2660 fps 300gr ruger have been substainiated -- within a couple FPS, as one expects with barrel to barrel variations --
G&A were able to get right there.with 300gr.. realguns superceeds it
http://www.gunsandammo.com/content/the-375-rugerseveral reports that the 270gr isn't fact as advertised, but in a 20 vs 24" barrel .. at 25fps per inch, its on spec
http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger-Hawkeye375.htmthough this report on 300gr factory says only 2560, 100fps slower, in a 20" barrel.. again, the old standby of 25 fps per inch

I would expect the difference to be less between barrel lengths in the .416 than the .375. The .375 would probably benefit from a 24" to 26" tube.
Friend of mine also built a .416 Ruger on a Stiller. He opted for a 20" tube I opted for 21.5" we both have same brand barrels cut with same reamer....only diff is I have loaded the Woodleigh 410 Rigby softs (which work fine with that cannelure placement in the Ruger) and he is using the 400 gr rem mag woodleigh offering.
I have loaded 75 gr of Varget behind the 410 woodleigh..............I suspect 2300 fps from my 21.5" tube

That's not bad. Most 375 H&H 300 grain reloads don't go much over 2500, at least when they go across an Ohler and that is 24" and longer barrels.
Last lot of factory 375 H&H I chronographed was a few years ago and was 270 grain Fail Safe and that was 2650 in a 26" barrel. Much the same as the old 270 grain Super X Power Points.

buffaloI got a few boxes of fac.ammo with the rifle (for free) when I bought my 375 Ruger Alaskan.
Hornady 300 grs DGX averages 2630 fps over the chrony - not bad for fac.ammo and in a 20" barrel.. Reloads with the 300 grs Nosler P have touched 2700 fps but best accuracy of loads in the 2600 fps area

Arild IversenNot DGX, but the Hornady factory 270 gr SP-RP Custom that came with the rifle (Hawkeye African 23" barrel) made a three shot average at 2846 fps.
The 300 gr Hornady RN Custom made a three shot average at 2612 fps.

That is about the best I have had from 375 H&H in 26" barrel and with Reloader 15
