modifying saftey on a #1 Ruger Login/Join

When I got my #1 in 458 Lott last year, I was a little peeved how the ejected cases came out. They hit the saftey and I had to tip the rifle to clear them. I called Ruger and asked them why does a rifle shooting a DG cartridge not eject the shell? The very pleasant lady told me that was so you didn't hit youself in the eye with the case.(no joke, thats really what she said) I took it upon myself to also grind about 1/8 inch off the front of the saftey lever so now when I open the action they eject! Any one else do any mods to the Ruger #1? I just read a post by big boar hunter and see that I am not the only one who didn't like the way they ejected either. The way I did the saftey was to put a peice of cardboard under the front ear of the saftey and I used a small triangle file to remove the metal. The cardboard keeps you from hitting the reciever with the file. Only took about 10 minutes.

Yes, I've had the same situation on my 5 #1s. Your answer is the same one I came up with.

Stubert, you are not alone. I had the same reaction to a #1 I had in .458 Win Mag.

The recessed safety idea sounds like an elegant solution. If I still had mine, I would opt for that in a heartbeat. Duane, are pictures available? Thank you.

Slash

That is such a vast improvement on the original safety that I am at a loss for words. The original safety is the least pleasing aspect on a N0.1.

Numerous reputable gun shops do this modification, and it's not very expensive. I have seen ones done by Turnbull, McCools, and Champlin Arms. I held a #1 this afternoon at Champlin's that was chambered in 500NE 3". It had the recessed safety. It also had modification to the falling block, so the ejector would clear the block. The ramp appeared stock, though I have seen the ramp opened up for 450 #2NE. I think #1's are great because they can be chambered to damn near anything, and only minor work is needed to handle the largest cases.
It would be nice if Ruger would just recess the safety from the factory. Then it would work for all chamberings and look much better.

And how much do you mean by, "not very expensive"?

Jason,
It has been 10 years since I had one done at Mackools in Tulsa...seems like it was around $200. It would cost you $200 round trip shipping to get your gun to Mackools or Champlins in Oklahoma and back to California
(I just sent one to Boron, Ca. and back).
You should get a price from a shop nearer to you. Duane Wiebe listed above does very nice work.
Again, It would be nice if Ruger would do this from the factory, as they chamber in numerous cases based on the .532 belted magnum.

I agree. I was very taken with my No. 1 when I first got it. It looked good, it handled well, it took those fat cartridges. I was quite disappointed when I discovered the safety situation. It seemed like such a stupid, Mickey Mouse thing.

As best I can remember , I have had 3 different #1s . I got rid of the first because of the safety , and it was a 45/70 , I fixed the safety on #2 and had the safety fixed on #3 ..... Just filing back the front of the factory slide on an angle works fine ... I think I used masking tape , to protect the receiver under the slide and an Oberg Chisel bit goofy file to file it back and re contour it .....

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

ON MY #1 B 220 SWIFT EJECTED CASES CLEARED THE SAFETY. ON MY #1S 338 WIN MAG EJECTED CASES CLEARED THE SAFETY. ON MY #1H 375 H&H THE EJECTED CASED DID NOT CLEAR THE SAFETY. THE WEIGHT OF THE CASE MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE CASE HITTING THE SAFETY. I TOOK THE GUN APART, REMOVED THE SAFETY AND RECONTORED THE SAFETY. WORKS BETTER NOW. A RESCESSED SAFETY WOULD BE A NICE TOUCH.
