Historical big bore fans,

I need some information that I have been unable to find elsewhere. I am getting ready to purchase the barrel for my project and the stock blank. I was wondering if traditionally barrels for rifles such as this were round, octogon, half-round half octogon, or some other configuration. Barrel will be coming from McGowan, and I need to get my facts straight before placing the order. Of course if half and half configuration would be cooler than shit let me know that too.

The original Oberndorf Mausers for this cartridge were the Type A model for the English market which had a round tapered barrel, the type B normal model had the same round tapered barrel, or a half round/half octagon barrel with a full length matted rib, or less commonly, a full octagon barrel. Take your pick.

Andy, the barrel profile on Stephen's 10,75 is what Mauser called the "Type E" contour. LW's contour #5130 is a direct copy of that barrel which Mauser supplied for all English trade rifles .40 caliber and up.

If you look closely at the fifth picture from the top (Stephen's post), you can see the rear sight base is a sleeve. You can also see the parting lines in the second photo. This is fitted on a straight shank section of the barrel. I don't think there is a commercial source for that particular sleeve but NECG has a similar one made to fit the 5130 contour barrel from LW. Or you can have one turned from scratch.

A true Mauser fan should have a copy of Jon Speed's tome "Original Oberndorf Sporting Rifles" in their collection.

You can get a copy at www.brownells.com His follow up book is good but this one has lots of pictures as well as specs.
