Just though I would share a few pics of this great new mount. Richard at Near has been making a 30mm mount for the m70 for a while, but not a 1". After a little begging he agreed to go ahead and finally write up a new program for a 1" scope mount. This thing is beautiful. Just looking at this thing makes me want to be a machinist. IMO the best mount money can buy. It will run you $325, and worth every penny.

all one piece. machined from stainless steel.

notice the recoil lug. this is why I think it will appeal to the large bore shooters.

here it is mounted on my .375 RUM. (thanks Biebs)

another closeup of the recoil lug against the front of the action.

If interested just check out Near MFG

Or better yet just call up Richard directly, he's more than happy to talk to you and discuss your needs.

Richards stuff is great. I have a picattiny rail by Near on a Sako TRG-S. The workmanship and design is superb. My rail is heavy though. Not the fault of Near, but it is. What does that base ring combo weigh? On a big bore it should be less of an issue.

that is a good question. I do remember thinking it felt lighter than I had anticipated. So I didn't even bother to weigh it. I have a 3 ring model I am mounting on a long range rig this week (weatherby .30-378 by hart) I'll weigh that one and see. I can truly say these are the only mounts I have ever pulled out of the box multiple times a day just to admire.

just thought I'd share another NEAR mount I put on my dad's .30-378 a couple of days ago. This is an Alphamount Hunter with dual front rings for the larger scope.

This mount actually has dual recoil lugs (the Model 70 only one in the front). The lugs fit firmly against the action. It just drops right in place and doesn't move at all even before the screws are down. You can see the both lugs here.

this is a long range rig, and we weren't too concerned with weight as you can see from the choice of scope (plus a 30" barrel). Gonna test this baby out at the range this weekend with some 200 gr CEB MTH bullets, loaded wayyyy out (single shot only). should be fun Smiler

NEAR makes great products -- I have them on my TRG-42 as well.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Will do Biebs! Schedule is finally allowing me some range time. Heading out this weekend.

Nice Sako 458Win! Coincidentally the .375 RUM is what I plan to take on my bear hunt with you next May (shooting 270 gr TSX) Big Grin
