gduffeyCongratulations to a proud father!!! It need a stock and a good blooding. Good job Ron. Saving my Ruger #1 .416Rigby for a .395 barrel after I get a few of these projects completed. So many rifles so little time (and $). gduffey

gduffeyRon, Elmer would approve of that "good sourdough front" and receiver sight. gduffey

Charles_HelmLooks good!

How's the bodywork coming?
Gary,
Hopefully it will get blooded on squirrels, pigs, deer, bison, and assorted African fauna too.
Elmer knew iron sights, yessirree.

A Ruger No.1 in .416 Rigby would make a sweet switch-barrel for a .395 Tatanka.

BiggPa,
Thanks. My thoughts precisely.

Charles,
Thanks. The stock is finished except the exterior/cosmetic finish. It is shootable now.
However showing it right now would be like posing this baby in a very dirty diaper.

Charles_HelmSo, are you going to shoot it and show us some targets, or wait until the paint is dry?
Great job getting to this point so fast.
Charles,
The stock exterior needs filling and sanding before painting. I'll be shooting it anytime I can as I go. It is internally as stout as a steel and epoxy reinforced MPI can be.

It will be two weeks before I can shoot some cast lead to fireform. Hopefully a target of squirrel load results and some fireformed brass then. Too bad some of us have to work and keep up with the family thing, or I would get it done sooner.

Oregon45What rear peep sight is that?

jeffeossoVery Nice, Ron... very nice...
good work...
it's exciting to be shooting a new bore, aint it? once you shoot about 5 rounds, you'll stop and grin and shake your head...
send me the resized-after-fireformed case capacity and i'll plug it into quickload

MacifejI don't know Mr. RIP?!?!

That looks like Yeti fur under that rifle.
Any external ballistic data on your new device?

packrattusnongratusThat's my favorite kind of baby picture. If you guys need a possible cast bullet to shoot, you may look at Midway. #169611 Is a cast 330 gr for 40 cal paper patch projectiles but it is 0.395". Just an idea. I am thinking about a 300 gr in .365 for my economical 9.3 X 74R loads. Good luck with the 395s. Packrattusnongratus
Oregon45,
Talley peep. It is great for a quick and accurate sight especially with the gold sourdough/patridge front. I may have to file the patridge down a bit. Thanks for noticing.

Jeffe,
Very kind of you, thanks. When I can fireform some cases I'll post capacity.

Canuck,
Thanks. Always nice to show off an invisible fiberglass stock. Prettiest kind.

Macifej,
First ever .395 exterior ballistics: I will be a while yet in getting sufficient quantities and time to shoot .395/340-grain GSC HV, FN, and SP's to do some expansion testing (HV at 1500 fps to +2500 fps), top end chronographing (HV and SP at +2800 fps?) , and trajectory checking out to 600 yards (HV and SP). We already know the terminal ballistics of the FN is foolproof in the proper size barrel (.395 groove and .387 land diameter) with a 12" twist.

packrattusnongratus,
Yep, best kind of baby picture.

from Buffalo Arms, and more on backorder from them and Midway, I got the .395/400-grain cast lead bullets designed for paper patching up to .400 or .401 BP calibers, as you say.
That 400-grain lead bullet is about the same length as the 340-grain GSC FN. It should serve for fireforming and barking squirrels, or head shots if any of the squirrels charge me.

tiggertateVery nice, RIP! Can't wait to see it fully dressed.

lawndartHey older brother,
Good work.
Can you PM me contact info for your smith?
My e-mail is in my profile as well.
We need to hook up in 2008.
I'm thinking hard about switching to the locums life-style.

prof242Absolutely beautiful, Ron. The only difference I've planned for mine is to use already ordered NEGC peep rear site and universal screw on ramp with the elevation in it. Oh, and a fiber optic bead.
Congrats!

Gotta go...Euclidia just burned the baby with her cigarette and the little bastard spilled his beer all over the new Elvis 8 tracks!!

tigger,
I hope to get her dressed in a clean outfit soon, plastic not wood. And a neutral color, not pink. Thanks for doting on the baby.

Bro' Dart,
Thanks for doting over the baby too. I guess you are Uncle Dart now.

I'll PM you.

Max,
Thanks. Good choice on your plans.

The .510 JAB has that screwed and soldered on front ramp with the elevation adjustment. That barrel was so fat I could not find a banded front sight big enough unless it was custom made.
The GSC barrel profile is very easy to fit anything to, being close to .700" at the 26" point on the blanks.
surestrike,
You still got that red '66 Mustang with the 8-track player and three on the floor?

x2mosg,
It is a baked on finish Kevin does in various colors (this dark gray, or olive drab, or black, and more) like Wilson Gunkote, close as I can tell. He calls it "Seal Paint" as in the Navy Seals like it. it is tough, I have yet to scratch or chip any of several guns I have in this finish by him. The barrel is stainless. All parts were matched in gray except the front sight was black.
The light colored crud along the ejection port has since been cleaned off, it was a little residue from the bedding work and wiped off with solvent.
This finish is impervious to anything I know of. It will not chip or rust. I prefer it to any bluing, and it takes to stainless or chrome-moly equally well.

RIP,
I traded it off on a real nice mid 80's black Camero with a .38 Special tape stuck in the cassette deck.
PS
That is a nice looking rifle. I am excited to see how she shoots and what the real numbers look like. It should be a winner.

.366torqueExcellent! Looking good, looking good!!
You kinda had me worried with the "naked" part of the topic!

09 July 2007, 19:38
mr rigbyThats one nice rifle RIP, just what the patients ordered to get their MD ok............
Theres many wildcatters thats has gotten their cartridge factory approved. Yours is something new, a new breath of life in a trade that hasnt invented new bullet diameters in years.
Keep it up RIP, fun to read about your projects.

John in SCMagnificent, sir.
The .395 Tatanka is the best that has ever been or will be.
I will stick with the GSC in my air rifle, especially since it makes my magic 2700 without undue pressure and of course it's the most efficient.

But the Tatanka is the end-all of cartridge developement. It will never be bettered, cet.par.
