Howdy Gents: Okay, I have a question about a Westley Richards rifle I ran across. The barrel is stamped ' .404 2.875" ' and the receiver '404 Magnum' So is this a .404 Jeffery or something else? I know the .404 Jeffery is also called .404 Rimless Nitro Express, but .404 Magnum is a new one on me. I looked on Ammo Guide and saw that the .404 Jeffery case is 2.860". Thanks for any information. I would think it would have to be the .404 Jeffery (10.75x73), the 73mm length coming out at 2.874". Never heard the .404 Jeffery referred to as a magnum before but the WR could have been made for someone who wanted it called that way in the same vein as a rifle posted elsewhere on this forum was engraved 500 Jeffery Magnum because the owner wanted it, although the 500J was never officially called a magnum. | |||

After 1925 the Rules of Proof required the case length to be stamped on the firearm as part of the proof. Pressure in tons was added in 1954 as I recall? Perhaps the rifle was re-barreled? It's an easy way to tell if the firearm was made prior to or after the change in British proof rules. Did you expect Westley Richards to stamp "404 Jeffery" on their rifles? As I recall their catalog refers to the 404 Jeffery as "Magnum". Marketing, pure and simple! Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate.
