Overkill,

You are probably going to get different answers to your question, but mine is the ghost ring.

 -

Different experts have held differing opinions over the years, but Finn Aagaard used to time visitors using different sights to try to get average responses for many shooters. I don't believe he published all his data before he died, just parts from time to time. In my opinion you do not want to know about an "average user", you want to know the story for a trained and experienced user.

Other factors than just the type of sight apply. Your big bore rifle will be used for the largest animals at close quarters in the tighest cover. You don't want a scope sight because it sticks up and can catch plants and whatnot as you try to move in the bush. Of course it will get hung up just when you need it. Same comment for the aimpoint type sights -- they all stick up over the rifle.

The ghost ring is the fastest of all the iron sights, which are lowest profile for sights. They stay out of the way. You don't look at the ghost ring, you look through it and put the foresight on the animal where you want the shot to go and deliver the shot.

I would agree with the ghost ring as being fastest

The Britisher style sights are the fastest: Big bead and shallow "V". But they definitely are not the most precise.

I personally have a knack about Patridge style sights ( post or Sourdough, etc. ). Coupled with square notch as backup sights, with peep for open sights work.

I wish somebody would make more of those, Marbles and Williams have quit making them. For day hunting they worked fine. Now everbody makes "Fire " or "Glow " sights ...

Faster than iron sights is a low powered scope. No front and rear sight to line up and all images are on one focal plane. Some may argue with this, but it is true.

Fast applies to getting a telling shot into the animal, not just to getting a shot off.

My source for the ghost ring being faster than the British express type sight is John (Pondoro) Taylor is his African Rifles and Cartridges. see the chapter of Sights and Sighting. That gentleman used them all shooting elephant for some 30 years.

The ghost ring is faster than any system with two sights to get the shot into the beast; taking time for sight alignment slows the shot down as compared to the ghost ring.

How precise are ghost ring sights? Can you put some tritium thing on the front sight for low light situations?

Ditto Ken Cline.
Fastest and most accurate: low power scope

Second fastest and second most accurate: Peep/ghost ring

Third fastsest and third most accurate of the three: express sights with the shallow "v."

But the express sights are among the most rugged and unobtrusive, and most pleasing aesthetically.

The large-aperture rear with a large ivory bead or Sourdough type blade front is the fastest iron sight for the reason that one liiks thgrough the rear opening and merely places the front bead on the spot one wants to hit, and BOOM!! The rear is ignored. Despite their speed, the shallow V does require some looking at the rear sight, which is not needed with the big aperture. A "0 X" to 1.5 X scope with large reticle, such as a prominent post or "heavy duplex" is probably faster than any iron sight, but requires a lot of practice at fast shooting with it, so one can acquire the target instantly and resist a tendency to try to aim very precisely.

The iron "V" sight is maybe faster for a second shoot than the Ghost Ring in calibers like the 460 wby and up.

Fastest sight is a big hole ghost ring and partridge square post..ignore the ghost ring and just put the front sight on the target and pull the trigger, same as a scope, only one thing to line up....second is a shallow V....then a low power scope...Now thats only for me under my testing for myself...

For 0 to about 35 yards, instinctive shooting is the fastest and most accurate by far, at least in my case..I can do this with a ghost ring or shallow v, but I cannot shoot instinctively with a scope on the gun...I shoot my double rifle considerably better instinctively than any other gun because of its perfect fit.
