.470 NE - jags, brushes, etc. for cleaning?? Login/Join

I'm new to the world of double rifles and the over .45 caliber cartridges. I recently purchased a new Merkel .470 NE double rifle. It's now dawned on me that I need some new supplies for cleaning it (doh!). So, I've been looking around for jags, brushes, etc. of the appropriate size. Not much luck so far.

I tried using a .45 caliber jag but the patches are too loose in the bore for my liking. I looked over the black powder cleaning supplies section, at my local store, but all I saw were .45 and .50 caliber jags and brushes.

So what do you guys use to clean your big bores in the .47 caliber size range? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-Bob F.

You can get cylindrical bronze brushes of literally ANY size from McMaster-Carr Industrial supply. I don't know offhand if they have the correct thread to fit on a standard gun cleaning rod, but you can certainly get the size you need!

Brownells has a new .475 caliber bore brush made for the new 480 Ruger pistol cartridge. Although it is a little short but it should work fine for your 470 NE. Have fun.

I had the same problem. I am building a 470 Capstick and was not able to find any jags and brushes for it. So, I bought a Pro-Shot 50 cal jag and chucked in my drill press. With it spinning, used a file to reduce the diameter of the jag to about .425. This seems to fit OK for me. You might try this and try it at different diamters as you file it down so get the fit you like. The donor jag was about $3.00.

I still haven't found any brushes for 470.

I have a .470 Capstick, and I use the .50 caliber brushes. They work just fine, and are not 'too tight' with a patch on them.

By George and by golly! [Big Grin] That is what I do too! I have been using the 50 cal brush with a patch and it works just fine for pushing the Wipe-Out out of my barrel of .475 caliber. Mainly a 50 cal plastic bristle brush or a 45 cal jag with enough patch to make it tight.

I ordered a .475 brush and jag once, but they never came in and I forgot about it.

Wipe-Out is great. A minimum of pushing and pulling in the bore is required with Wipe-Out.

Whip it out with Wipe-Out. [Big Grin]

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, tips and information. I really appreciate it.

Maybe with the .480 Ruger now being on the market, there will be some .475" jags on the market in the near future.

Sincerely,
-Bob F.
