Reverend Recoil450 Marlin in a bolt rifle
I have a French MAS 36 rifle that I would like to sporterize. I have been thinking of the 450 Marlin cartridge for this rifle and a stock similar to a Savage 99 or Ruger No.1. The 7.5 MAS cartridge was loaded to 50,000 psi presure so I think 450 Marlin loads with 400 gr. bullets could be stepped up to 2200 fps safely. What do you think? Would the recoil be to much for a medium weight sporter?
Another issue is there is no safety on the MAS 36 and I have not been able to come up any kind of adaption. A cross-bolt safety in the trigger guard will not work because this rifle uses the trigger sear as a bolt stop. Such a safety would not allow removal of the bolt. Any ideas? I have kept the bolt handle in the up position or the chamber empty until I am ready fire. This has worked so far.

dsitemanIf you are really dead set on the 450Marlin that is one thing, but have been told the conversion of the Russian M/Nagant to 45/70Gov't does make a nice pkg, but being somewhat on the light side, imagine recoil would be stout. Just a suggestion and believe with some minor inquiries, full details could be had fairly easy?? Good Luck.

KabluewyIf you want a bolt action 450 Marlin, I'll sell you mine. It's on a stainless Ruger short action, that was initially a 350 Rem Mag. The barrel is stainless #5 pac-nor, with 20" twist, and it's 20" long. It has a spec tech trigger, and a hogue stock - the one with the full aluminum insert. I also have a set of new dies, and fifty pieces of new brass.
PM me if interested.

KabluewyI don't have any pictures right now. The gun is actually at my gunsmiths shop, on consignment. I thought it would go before moose season, but I think my smith is more interested is selling his stuff instead.
Anyway, I haven't given it much thought lately, until I saw this post. I've been busy with a divorce and all associated distraction. It's one of the few projects that I lost interest in before it was finished, but I went ahead with it anyway.
Now, someone else can enjoy it right away without having to wait on a gunsmith.
If you or anyone is really interested, I could have my smith send it to me, and I'll post pictures, but it's not difficult to imagine what it looks like. All Hoague stocks look the same, as well as all stainless short action rugers MKII. The barrel is #5 contour, and 20" long, so it's big enough to add sights.
I'll take $750, plus shipping.
Thanks,
KB
