Has anyone experience with this round? Is it fairly available? Would it be worth the effort/expense? I was thinking of having my .450 Ackley rechambered for it if I could find a reamer. Any suggestions as to a smith?

Thanks,
WTA

There is a poster on HuntAmerica called OldSarge that has a BRNO 458 that was rechambered to 450 Rigby.

He might be your man.

Telly, what action is your 450 Ackley on? The "Custom Rifle Gazette" (no longer in print, only one issue published, I have it) has an article on the original 450 Rigby Rifle built by Rigby. Other than lower chamber pressure at like velocities, I see no advantage of the Rigby over the Ackley, unless you are like I and appreciate the nostalgia of a Rigby cartridge.

Telly,
I think you'll find the 450 Dakota to be very similar as far as velocity and pressures at the same velocity as the 450 Rigby. Dakota brass would definately be easier to get hold of. The 450 Ackley that you have is a very good cartridge that will do it all and probably hold one extra round. 470 Mbogo

From "DJM", a friend @ another talk forum:
"The .450 Rigby was designed by Paul Roberts, former MD of Rigby's about 1993. I remember first reading about it in 1994. The 450 Rigby is basically a 416 Rigby that has been blown out but shortened as well.
It was not intended to achieve the power of the 460 Weatherby but to push a 480 grain bullet to about 2400 fps. Working pressures are much lower than that of the .460."
I find this to be of very desirable design and may approach the ideal vessel for .458 caliber bullets. The bottle neck design and lower operating pressures set it apart from the Lott / Ackley offerings. The Dakota is similar and is also attractive.

I have a picture on my website under cartridge comparrisons of the 416 Rigby, 450 Rigby and the 470 Mbogo side by side. Click on the picture and it will enlarge and have a description. The website is www.470mbogo.com. I asked when I was at Rigby's in London about brass and it was very expensive to get it through them. I think they are the only ones offering it. 470 Mbogo

I agree with 470 Mbogo...I would just use the 450 Dakota, it's identical apparently or at least close enough for Government work....

To me, the 450 Rigby and 450 Dakota are the same, and just more 460 Weatherby wannabes. They are all too much gun for me. And I wonder whether there would be that much practical difference between your Ackley and one of them.

Obviously, from an availability standpoint, the Dakota would be preferrable to the Rigby. Have fun.

Will,
You are, of course, correct ... any difference on game is unlikely. However, there is something to be said in achieving the desired velocity while burning a minimum of powder, rather that downloading a more voluminous casing, as with the .460 Wea. Doing so at lower operating pressures and with the superior feeding characteristics of the bottleneck casing over the long straight casing, is also a plus.

You are also correct. It boils down to magazine capacity, doing with less with the 416 Rigby variations or either changing the magazine.

If he can afford a Dakota, by all means he should go for it, if Dakota can keep the weight down to a desirable level. I will see soon if I can handle Lott as the 470 has plenty of recoil. Personally, the 450 Dakota/Rigby may be too much horsepower for an old man like me!
