Alf, Does the Granite Mountain suffer from this drawback?

Considering that none of the following rifle bolts are so equipped and that I've never had any of them bind in the 40+ years that I've been shooting bolt action rifles.....it begs the question.....is this a critical issue? Winchester M-70 Remington M700 Savage Bolt actions Sako Weatherby Howa Marlin Kimber Mossberg p-17 did the springfield have one? how many others? I'm all for engineering to the third standard deviation.....but the 63rd? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." vapodog I could be on the wrong track with misunderstanding but... There was considerable difference (at least in my opinion) between the Post 64 and 68 M70s when the slot was put into the right hand lug. Ditto for Rem 700. Wbys would also be better if the bolt stop/bolt guide was square in section rather than round. Isn't the thing on the side of the old Sakos that looks a CRF extractor a bolt guide. I think if the 63rd third standard deviation is available then it would be good...whatever the third standard deviation means But for what a Granite is and the rifle likely to be build on a Granite then you want everything as nice as it can be.....even if that only means it works nicer in your lounge room over a glass of Red. Mike, my point is simply that because an action is void of a chharacteristic this is not a condemnation of the action. I'd be a trifle miffed if my mauser action lacked the anti bind bar on the bolt.....not for any reason than it's always been there..... But is it necessary.....no other action has it... To your point...Many do but in another place and geometry.....I don't disagree....M-70 bolts do in fact have specific geometry to address anti bind. However, when after 40 years of running a bolt action rifle and in a lot of different flavors and not once ever have a bolt bind up on me.....I really wonder just why we get so uptight about it. Mauser set the standard for boltaction rifles back in 1898 and whether we like it or not that standard has been modified very successfully by (mostly) Winchester and except for the exclusion of CRF a lot of other companies have adopted it and modified it for reasons of cost or other considerations. To the unbelievable credit of the '98 mauser these modifications are very slight..... The fact that now someone else is honoring the long time design with still a slight alteration is not a condemnation but a continued tribute to the design. Pick up the gun and cycle it...work it...shoot it. Put it thru it's paces....then judge. To the credit of 500 geains, his standards are extremely high in the quality department. I, for one, admire that.....and hopefully he can afford to buy to his standard. I appreciate that. However a little toterance would help. An action missing a usual feature is not always a bad thing...a M-1999 MRC bolt stop is not a bad thing...it's not '98 but I have one and it's as good as it needs to be....it works. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." vapodog I think a key point and this is the difference (although a lot of shooters will not admit it) is that M-1999 MRC, standard M70 or whatever are rifles to go shooting with. You and I know they all work and even Rem 700 bolt handles are not cluttering up the the nice pristine bush land But once the dollars go up the rifle does move into the toy department and the criteria becomes different. If I was bying a Wby Syntetic tomorrow I could not care if the trigger guard and floor plate were made of some high tech plastic. But on the dearer gun I have to all steel bottom metal. To say my knowledge of Mausers is limited would be a gross overstatement But on a Granite I would want whatever 500 Grains is talking about. Mike

I've seen folks with lever action rifles shell all the ammo on the ground and never fire a single shot when a buck walked by. It's comical....and a flaw of the shooter and not the gun. To the rest of the post I must bow to greater shooting experience....I thank you for the chat.....It's damn near midnight here and the dog is snoring.....think I'll join him with some snoring of my own. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
