Call me a conehead, I've owned many Mag. Sakos and always assumed 3 in the mag. Noticed a post saying they hold 4, pulled out my .416 AV and sure enough 4 down. Its still a push feed but it sort of makes it more interesting.

The only things I like better than a 5 shot bolt gun are a 6 shot bolt gun and a double. Smiler

I hear fine but my understanding is lost.

I read that tradition is king.....and that's fine.

I fully understand the value of the double as it's not comparable to a bolt in any manner.....it allows for two aimed shots in very quick succession.....but the bolt with more than three shots down seems to be purely academic as anything I have to shoot at more than three times has already eaten me.....

A double works fine.....but a bolt has to have five rounds.....this logic evades me!!!

I'm well aware that one can recharge his double quickly and actually get off four shots at a target leaving the scene........But I suspect that one could get off four shots from a bolt as fast as a double that has to reload.....and it's fully acceptable for a double to have extractors and not ejectors.....as long as it's a double.

The safari rifles with their dropped floorplates are extremely attractive and traditional. However it's long been my feeling that tradition plays a larger role than function.

I agree bolts guns and Double Rifles are not comparable but I am with 500grains on this one for sure.

I never really paid much attention to the magazine capacity of my bolt rifles until I purchased a couple of CZs and noticed that they had a bunch of firepower (5 down).

Went off on my first Cape Buffalo hunt and realized that the larger magazine capacity is a significant advantage. Being in and among a bunch of Cape Buffalo, more is better in terms of magazine capacity...gave me a little more comfort.

On one occasion I used the full magazine (5 shots)...anyone of those shots would have killed that Buffalo but he refused to fall until shot number 4...and he was not the only Buff still hanging around! Eeker

I am going to build a couple of DGRs and they will hold at least four down, possibly five. Smiler

I think the newer PF Sako's, hold 4. I'll have to check but I'm fairly certain that my L61R CRF, 375H&H only holds 3.

I have emptied a five shot bolt rifle and a six shot bolt rifle, both times on dead-but-didn't-know-it-and-running-to-beat-the-devil dangerous animals. One a cape buffalo and the other a hippo.

I have also been in among dozens of buffalo and elephant up close and personal.

MORE ammunition, on board and ready to feed, is WAY better than less!

I checked this morning....my 375 H&H Sako AV holds 4 down. Plenty of room to close the bolt over one in the chamber too--5 rounds in the gun is rare in a magnum with a flush floorplate.

Cheers,

Dan

One of the best things about the Brno 602s is that my 458 Lott holds 6 in the mag from the factory.

Ha! I've been extolling big magazine capacity for years. Seems other have jumped on that train!

Talk is cheap. When the ocassion comes along that 4 or 5 or 6 shots are NEEDED in a HURRY, them DR are just as fast? Spare me.

Will,

Pardon, but if 4 or 5 shots are needed, then some marksmanship lessons are needed also.

500grains,

I agree. One shot is sufficient for anyone who can shoot.

In fact, any magazine rifle is the crutch of a poor marksman.

Double rifles are likewise tools for the shooting-impaired. Doubles would be greatly improved by deletion of those superfluous second barrels.

The single shot is the only tool of the true believing, twist-barrel using dangerous game hunter. Big Grin

Come on Mrlexma and 500grains, do buffalo always go down with one shot ,even in the right spot? How about elephant? I,m no guru on shooting buffalo but it seems enough of the realy good shooters often need a few shots up there sleeve for the buffalo which didnt know it was suposed to drop..

Do not let the youth and inexperience of my detractors influence the truth. Wink

Anyone with so little experience should not be throwing stones. Obviously the proof is in the video pudding as to who can shoot and who can't. Cool

Will,
I take it then that you don't feel the double rifle is the best tool for DG hunting?????

Will,

Didn't I read that you missed a whole buffalo cleanly at 75 yards? Big Grin I think I picked up that fact in a red-bound confession with your name on the front. Wink

Not always, when your in hunting situations stuff happens. Targets move, limbs jump in the path of bullets, hunter is out of breath, animal pumped with adrenaline, ect. I've seen well hit animals travel far enough to do damage if they wanted to.
