I have a chance to buy a 416 Taylor custom rifle built on a mauser that a friend of mine owned. I want to shot 300 to 350 grain bullets in the Taylor. I have not found alot of data for the lighter bullets. I have all the handloader mags, wildcat reloading, bigbore & a-square books none has much light bullet data.I have been to the very good 416 taylor website and it does not have alot of light bullet data. The bullet I'm most interested in is the 325 grain Northfork. Any help would be great.

THANKS

Ed,

Sometimes you have to blaze your own trails [Smile] Check with Mike Brady at NorthFork; chances are he has some data you can use.

Welcome to the world of the big bores [Big Grin]

Ask Steve Ricciardelli although his 416 Taylor is limited on his pages I bet he can help. He is on the reload forum via "Ricciardelli".

If you do a search on this site, you will come across a 416 Taylor web page address, devoted to the cartridge. - Dan

Ed, did you see the load data for the 335 grain Trophy bonded using Varget and one of the Vhitavuouri powders on the .416 entry on the reloading page on this Web site?

I get to pick mine up today, after more than 9 months of waiting. Czech Vz24 action, wing safety, Bold trigger, PacNor stainless barrel, B&C Medalist stock (aluminum action block). We're going to do a testfire to check the chamber and I have five rounds of Horn. 400 over 70 grains Re 15, Fed. 215 primer in WW brass ready to go.

Bill, Thats the exact same load I used to test mine when it was built last fall. It only took a couple of shots and I was in love. With a 24" barrel you should get 2250 or 2300fps. [Smile]

It's nice to meet some people who have heard of this round, most people look at mine and say,"416 WHAT?". I planned on using the lighter end bullets for mine as well so I bought the cheapest 350 gr. bullets I could find so I could work up my own loads before moving on to the better ( read expensive ) bullets. Pick up a box of Speer mag tips and get a good load down pat, then you only have to drop down a little to start a load for your hunting round. You might even like the Mag Tips and stay with them. Whatever you end up with please post it as I can never get enough load data.

I just gotta add some praise for the 416 Taylor.

I have given mine the pet name "Gungnir." This is the spear of Odin that decides the battle by the direction it flies over the battlefield. Even Thor and Mjolnir take note, and follow orders.

With a 26" Shilen stainless barrel of 14" twist, 75 grains of RL-15 gave 2418 fps at 80 degrees F, with the Hornady 400 grain RNSP. No hint of any problems in my rifle. Primer was the F215 and brass was the RP 458 WM case necked down. Winchester 458 WM brass will allow a bit more powder to be used if one ever maxes out the RP brass. Or you might need a grain or so more powder in the Winchester brass to equal velocities from the RP brass.

I got excellent headstamped brass from Quality Cartridge for the 416 Taylor, which averaged 244.2 grains in case weight, as compared to 246.6 grains for the RP. These ought to be pretty close to interchangeable in hand loading.

70 grains of RL-15 is indeed a good starting load in any brass.

As of a few months ago, Mike was no longer making the 325gr version of his North fork bullet.

He got some field reports which did not meet his standards, and wants to do more testing on this bullet.

He may sell you what he still has on hand though. Great guy too, don't miss a chance to call him.

Hey Ed,

Would that particular rifle happen to be one put together by Bedeaux Gun Shop in Albuquerque, NM? If so, then drop me an email and I will give you a little data I have.

Good Hunting,
