My latest Husqvarna purchase has brought me into the land of obsolete cartridges. Any help with loading data would be greatly appreciated. I would prefer nitro for black loads. Thanks in advance. Steve

Steve Here is what Black Powder Express double rifle shooters use to load Nitro for Black loads. Take 40 to 45% of the original black powder load. Substitute IMR 4198. Then place either dacron or a foam plug between the bullet and the powder. It is imperative that the filler be COMPRESSED between the bullet and the powder. The filler MUST be COMPRESSED. Hi sbhva, The first step is to get Graeme Wrights Loading the British Double Rifle. That book is full of Great information. The original loads for the 500/450 #1 was 110 grains Black with either a 270 H.P. or a 310 grain bullet. There was a cordite for black load listed as 42 grains smokeless and a 365 metal based bullet. Slug your bore. The 500/450 was a very early express cart. The bore diameters run all over the place. Once you have a 450 cast bullet sized to fit you can duplicate the original load by taking 40 % of the Black load that is 110 x.40 = 44grains of IMR or H 4198. reduce 10% or start about 40 grains. You can work up from there. Fill the case with Dacron packing. Enough to be firmly held in place when you seat the bullet. This is usually about 5-6 grains in this size case. you DO NOT WANT JUST A LITTLE WHISP OF DACRON. it has to be enough to hold the powder firmly against the primer. This will give you a Ballistic equivalent of the original loads at less that Black powder pressures. Neat old Cart. Killed several Dear and hogs with it. If you own a gun and you are not a member of the NRA and other pro 2nd amendment organizations then YOU are part of the problem.
