I noticed in the New Products section of this month's RIFLE Magazine there's a brief writeup of the Legacy/Rossi Model 92 rifle in .454 Casull. Not too long ago, on some discussion board, one of the "contributors" stated that this gun was very dangerous, the M92 action was too weak for the .454, and that these guns would "blow up"!! At the time, I found this assertion incredible, since the .454 Casull was chambered in some converted original M 92 Winchesters as early as the late 1950's (per Ackley). Additionally, I found it hard to believe that anyone would market a gun in this country that was going to blow up, in view of the activities of the Trial Lawyers!!! According to RIFLE, this gun was thoroughly tested by H.P. White Labs, and "came through with flying colors". About what I had expected!! Now to figure out where to get the cash for one...
There's one of those Pumas at the local gunshop. I've been waiting for somebody else to buy it, and put a few hundred rounds through it, just to see how it stands up.

Since the .454 operates in the upper 50,000 psi range I'm sure some of you would feel quite comfortable rebarreling your M-92s in say 308 Win? If its such a great idea I wonder why neither WInchester nor Marlin has offered such a rifle?!?! The morons in marketing must have totally missed the opportunity here and just decided that something like the new .450 Marlin would sell more rifles than a 454/45 LC levergun... Lots of custom smiths have made up test rifles in this caliber...try and find one who will make you one! Read Paco Kelly's article in the link below about 45 colt in M92 actions and his experience with 454 loads...http://forums.sixgunner.com/
The casull acording to speer #13 is running 65,000 PSI another article stated it at 70,000 PSI. The gun industrie is all about money, Of course. There is a large market for a 454 casull lever gun. I consider the puma a low end rifle. When one of the big boys builds one. I will buy it and a lot of people share my sentiment. Why will MARLIN,RUGER,WINCHESTER not offer a rifle that many of us want? Some where I read that MARLIN said they didnt think the action would be strong enough to with stand casull pressures. What about a company like BUFFALO BORE that states use of their ammo in specific guns like the contender or super redhawk only, what if that stuff found its way into a puma??
If you really believe the "big boys" are all that anxious to build us the guns we want, just take a look at Remington's abortion of a platform for the .350 Mag., now that they have decided to gamble once again on this decidedly desireable caliber! Why couldn't they just make it in a nice M7, without the bloody rib and gut-hook front sight!!
I havent seen the gun your talking about.I didnt say they were anxious to build a gun we want. I belive the problem is liability. In my opion they wasted resourses in building the RUGER 480 and the MARLIN 450, the time would have been better spent building a 454 casull lever gun. I know of 5 people who would buy one in a heart beat and the general consensus is people want a 454 casull lever gun. I think they are afraid to build one! Why else would a gun company not make a rifle that, I think would sell like a 10/22
Its obvious Rossi uses modern steel to make this rifle, and make it hold up enough that they'd produce the rifle. Its also available in 480 Ruger. ~~~Suluuq
