What's the use/reason for double square bridges if they aren't drilled and tapped for a scope mount?

I think they aesthetically pleasing, but is that the only reason for them?

The front scope ring (with claw feet) has to attach near the front of the scope, to allow for tilting. If the scope was short, your would use the double square bridge receiver. If the scope was long, you would use the single square bridge and place the front mount on the barrel in front of the reciever ring.

These actions gained a cult following when British firms used them for iron sighted express rifles. The flat bridges, often used with a 1/4 or full rib, gave a level sighting plane that could aid in faster alignment of the iron sights.
