What were some of the common case lengths/dimensions for the 4, 8 and 10 bores? I know the 4 bore was under and inch or so and got up to 4" or more long. Also can anyone who owns one of these measure or even hazard a guess at case capacities. Karl.

I'll look around, Karl. In the meantime: www.cybertorpedo.com/africanhunter/firearms/4bore_part01_01.htm www.cybertorpedo.com/africanhunter/firearms/4bore_part02_01.htm www.drake.net/html/vintage3.html www.countrylife.co.uk/lifecountry/pursuits/big_bore.htm www.champlinarms.com/services.cfm They machine 4 bore and 8 bore brass and might give you dimentional data. Let me know what happens. I know the 4 Bores had variances from 3.5" - 4.25" in case length and the 8 Bores had variances from 3" - 3.5" in case length. Hey Karl, 4 bore = 400 grains of Fg BP http://members.boardhost.com/powderhorn/msg/553.html 8 bore = 300 grains of Fg BP---8-10 Drams B.P. http://www.chuckhawks.com/bigbore.htm These are loads that I have been able to find. However, they are not case capacities. I was able to find nothing on the 10 bore. The smallest of these old rifles, the 10 bore, shot REALLY big bullets - like 700 grains. I read somewhere that anyone who thought that shooting a .460 Weatherby, held lightly to the nose, from the bench kicked hard should never shoot a 4 bore from any position. Hope this helps, Smoker

According to my software, the approximate case capacities are, 8 bore 3 1/2" case - 400gr and for the 4 bore 4" case - 600gr. Now someone with the real cases measure them so we can see how good the software is. judy
