What to do?
Ok, I have a Remingtion 1917 action coming, what to build on it?

I have a .404 Jeffery, should be done in December, so I have that one covered. I have a Browning FN in .375H&H...what to do with this action...oh, the horror! jumping

I am thinking of the .500 Jeffery, .500AR or?

What about my little 550 Gibbs?
It cover that "...yeah, though I walk thru the Valley of the Shadow of Death" thing pretty well.
There are also a nice selection of bullet weights and designs to choose from, thanks to R Neal Shirley.

I thank you for that offer Jeff! I will have to try and clear up a weekend. I could use some good instruction as well!

Take Jeffeosso up on that, It's a great idea to get a hands on with several big bores before making a decision.

My option would be for the 500 Jeffery, as it is a very powerful caliber for dangerous game. The professional hunter large, originally from Spanish Tony Sanchez Ariño has thousands of elephants hunted with him and with his beloved is his 416 Rigby "hobbyhorse." Also I think the 505 Gibbs is a great size for this activity, which has some benefits but less than 500 Jeffery, are more than enough to demolish a single shot of any pachyderm placing the shot properly (well it has to do with all gauges), and with the advantage of having a case bigger than the 500 Jeffery and therefore works with lower pressure chamber which is very important in hot environments such as those in Africa.

As for more modern cartridges, I will stay with the 458 Lott, for being my favorite jejeje.

Oscar.

Oscar,
othe rthan the gibbs is a huge PITA (dolor en el extremo) to properly load for, as the case is HUGE and modern powders aren't ask bulky or temp sensitive as cordite, you are correct

for the same bullet weight and velocity, the gibbs kicks MORE and burns more powder.

The 500 jeffe kicks less than the gibbs .. ive shot them side by side, and my 500 ar kicks less than the jeffe, as it is designed to be more effecient with modern powders.

Higher pressure than a gibbs? well, now, THAT depends on the day... a load of cordite gibbs, at 10 c is one pressure, and ALOT more at 35

"no cordite loads today, jeffe" .. EXACTLY ... the pressure concerns of cordite and unknown steel are things of the past, and are no longer a concern, within reason.

Jeffeosso,

did I just hear you use the word "efficient" or equivalent thereof? Shame on you!!

Put a loaded round of my 550 Gibbs in either front pocket and strange women come up to you and ask "do I know you, or is that a random reaction?".

Rich,
I'd be really popular in your town!

Thanks for the clarification, I will not be able to buy any of those calibers in Spain, because we have legislation, both because of its diameter are prohibited because they are considered as "war." Absurd huh?, But so is the archaic laws in my country.

Oscar.

Thanks for all the input, I have narrowed it down to three, .500 Jeffery, .470 AR or .500 AR. I like the looks of all of them.
