Rifle dropped on muzzle Login/Join

Well, I finally got my CZ550 to BC to get the ejection issue worked on. A friend of mine, with a house down there, took it. As he opened the gun (soft) case at the smitty's place, he managed to drop the gun onto it's muzzle, reportedly chipping it. Haven't spoken to the gunsmith yet to assess the damage. [insert favorite curse, I probably used it]

Maybe it's a sign that I should take an inch off the barrel and replace the front sight, to make it more flexible when matching it with the peep that someday will be on it.

Nothing like a new crown and better sights to make a rifle shoot better! clap

What harm could a little tweaking do?

Not to scare you, BUT if it took a lick bad enough to CHIP the muzzle, it may have warped the barrel as well. boohoo

Maybe you should ask the person responsible to repair it for you.....after all you did leave it in the care of the "smith" didn't you? Ask him to repair it...do so kindly at first.

Vapodog,

If I read the first post correctly, it was his friend who was unzipping the soft case when the rifle fell, not the gunsmith.

Yep, friend did. His remark to the gunsmith was "You can start by fixing this, at my costs". So all is well financially... don't mentioned warped barrels Wink
I worry enough as it is! Frowner

I guess smitty is enjoying the long weekend, but I'll try to get him on the phone again next week, discuss options... new front, peep sight.

Bent barrel... now why did you go and say a thing like that, there goes another night of sleep. Wink

I think you could use a barrel for a jack handle or pry bar and get use out of it before you'd bend it; especially if it a big bore rifle barrel. There's some steel in these and its pretty dang tough steel too.

Sleep well and dream of new sights.

Rob, I do that trick all the time with worn, or dinged muzzles. You wouldn't believe the flak I get from the elite .0001" tolerance type gunsmiths. But I did a target rifle muzzle with the round screwhead trick, and I shot a 197-12X with the sucker at 1000 yds. The 8 and 9 in that string were my fault-held my breath too long! Sounds like some lathe time is needed if the outside corner is chipped. Or if you're really good with a slack belt sander, and the chip is small....

Hello XS headspace,
Good to see a fellow match shooter out there. Are you shooting prone/sling or F class, scope or irons?? What caliber are you using these days, 284.6.5?? Just curious and don't see much from long range shooters these days. Good score reported there. That's High Master score I believe. Favor Center!!

Frans,

I did that once too on a garage floor, and recutting the crown was enough.

I have also ball-cut a Savage M99 crown once upon a time, and that works too. The crown was worn by a kid with a cleaning rod (not me this time).

Good opportunity for a 22 inch barrel with a recessed crown!

I would NEVER damage a crown.....Oops, I remember now I did it once in Idaho. But this was a buttstock failure because the rifle fell after I stood it in a corner.
