Anyone know what pressure standard Hornady is loading to with this cartridge? CIP calls for 46 ksi piezo and 36 ksi crusher -- the same or less pressure than the .30-30. Obviously a Ruger No. 1 and good brass could go well beyond this. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

Bill General question - why the need to go well beyong this ? Are you wanting to shoot longer range with the calibre ? I just can't see the point, plenty of other calibres to do it with. .

Bill in the Ruger #1 you can load it up to where it will kill on both ends! Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate. 500N: I'm not planning to "go well beyond this," but thought it might not take much more to get a 400-grain bullet to 2250-2300 at a still very reasonable pressure. Also simply curious whether Hornady loads to the CIP level. Rusty, yes, a No. 1 is an unkind beast to the shooter as well as the shootee ... You can go well beyond that in a Ruger no. 1 as a matter of fact. In a Ruger no. 1 I have shot the 400 gr. at 2300 FPS without a hint of a problem..but recoil is a bitch...I opted for a load of 2200 FPS and it still kicked pretty good. Rule of thumb is a cartridge is only as strong as the brass, the no. 1 is probably among the strongest actions in the world. Some years ago someone made case heads from steel and you screwed them into threaded brass cases..I may still have a couple of those..We shot them in a Ruger No. 1 and you cannot believe what we got out of a 30-06 with 200 gr. bullets. I won't even quote the velocity here. We got what the company claimed and then a bunch more..the gun was tied to a tire and it was never damaged in the least..It was an interesting experiment and I've often wondered why those case heads didn't survive the market. FWIW, when I ran the factory stuff through my barrel, they registered what they were supposed to at just under 40KSI. They weren't too speedy out of a 27" barrel at ~2050fps but I guess that is what is "historical".

Put a Limbsaver on it, it works wonders on the Ruger No 1. I don't think you will have too much trouble getting 2250 fps. Some "fast" doubles - ie those that just seem to be faster than others due to the barrel, bore etc (plus of course a bit higher load) get close to this. .

500N: I put on the Limbsaver before shooting it. Ray, I think you are right with about 2200. Just ordered some 400-grain solids from Cutting Edge Bullets. Can you say "Penetration"? Thanks Michael) There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

Hello Ray, First let me say that I'm not trying to start a pissing contest. I'm really not as that is not my style. But I noticed that you say the 450-400 with a 400 grain bullet at 2300 fps in the Ruger #1 is a bitch while on another thread, you state that the 416 (typically 400 grain bullet at 2400fps) is not a problem. Is the issue the Ruger #1? Weight or stock design of the Ruger?

I am reasonably certain that Hornday loads ALL its ammo to SAAMI pressures or BELOW as this is the standards used in the USA...CIP being European standards...as do ALL weapons and component makers...or they would have a hard time producing products without the axe of some product liability lawyer hanging over their necks...I don't think ANY main stream gun product manufacturer isn't voluntarily signatory to SAAMI. There is no direct way to compare PSI(PIEZO) to CUP(COPPER CRUSHER UNITS OF PRESSURE) also and this has been a bone of contention for HOW LONG??...and tons of disagreement all over this and other forums, all you have to do is a little research. 46 KPSI(PIEZO) might equate to 36 KCUP(CRUSHER)...BUT... you have to go down the hoohaw road and still never get there....except...ONLY if one of the ammo makers actually PUBLISHES the pressure figures in BOTH pressure references and says it's ammo adheres to BOTH standards... In the case of the 450-400 I don't know for certain. There are mathimatical formulas for converting PSI TO CUP and vis versa which you can find online, I have a couple, but I definitely WON'T publish them...getting one mixed up with the other won't cause a problem going one way but will definitely put a hurt on you and your gun going the other way....if you happen to try to reload to the wrong answer!!!! A 400 gr bullet at 2400fs in ANY gun...as long as the rifle weights are the same...produces the exact same recoil...basically all three of Newtons laws are involved and the law of Kinetic energy...perceived/subjective recoil is something else again. Todd, The issue, with me, is the Ruger No.1, but recoil is individual with folks..The Ruger No.1 in a 458 is pretty grusome IMO, but not in one of my custom Mauser rifles that fit me, same with the 450-400 in a double rifle its mild enough even when loaded up to 2200 in my Searcy, but not in the Ruger No.1. It boils down to stock fit and rifle weight I suppose in that the double weighs 10.5 to 11 pounds. Same with the .416 Rem. My .416 weighs 9.5 lbs with iron sights but the stock is built to my specs and its quite mild to shoot a 400 gr. bullet at 2400 FPS...I had a Ruger No. 1 that I sold on AR btw, and its recoil was considerably more than my Mauser..I think most big bore shooter agree on this issue. Thanks for the response Ray. I have a couple of Ruger #1's as well but the largest is a 45/70 which is brand new and I haven't shot it yet. I shoot a 500 NE double as well as a CZ 550 in 416 Rigby so I'm familiar with the importance of a properly fitting stock and properly weighted rifle for the caliber. That's why I asked the question, I figured the issue was the rifle itself. Cheers, Todd
