Just got a 458 win mag today. It is CRF , cock on closing, and has a forward fire and back safe safety on the right side similar to where remington safety are. It has a round bolt handle that is a little dogglegged. The magazine box is standard length not H-H length. Any one know what it might be? The only writing on it is very very small and says "not english made".
I cant wait to shoot it. The wood stock on it looks like it would be nice with a new finish. It has been glass bedded barrel and action and has a williams peep sight.
I hope it like 350 X bullets.

Sounds like a converted P-17 or P-14 Enfield. Is the safety on the right hand side, behind the bolt handle, looking like a little turkey drumstick? Forward to fire, back for safe?
I believe A-square used modified Enfields for their big kickers. My father has a P-17 with the original military barrel, chambered to 308 Norma magnum; if skillfully done, they look nice.

The safety is on the right side and does look like a turkey drumstick . A guy at the range today said it was a 1917 enfield.
Shot some 400 grain speers through it today the peep sight is right on too. loaded up some 350 speers today I am going to have to get a range membership.

Thanks 500grains.
I am just curios to know which manufacturer made this action. The serial number starts with W . I wonder if that means anything.

There is very little visual difference between a p14 nad p17 enfield. My Lott is built on a P14. the extractors are different since the 14 was originally made for a 303 brit (rimmed) and the 17 is a '06. Most 14's have the initials of the american company by the serial #. take for instance my Lott it has ERA (eddystone remington) vs the 17 usually has the full name written out.

I'm starting to learn about the enfields and this is what I was told. Anybody know any differant or was I told pretty good?

The Enfield actions are strong, actions, and will handle 375 H&H length rounds with some mads, and without sacraficeing any strenth. You should try some full house 400, or 450 gr solids in it. This caliber is a lot more versetile than people give it credit for being. The 458 Win Mag useing 400/450 gr bullets instead of the factory 500/505 gr bullets, it can handle anything walking the earth today. IMO, 500 gr bullets are too heavy for the case capacity of the Win Mag case, but it shines with the 400/450 gr bullets.
The 400 gr Speer is perfect for deer, and black bear, as long as you don't push it too fast. That bullet was designed for no more than 1950/2000 fps. Barnes makes a 400 gr soft point that has a .035 thick jacket, that is designed for 2150 to 2500 fps, and is a better bullet for Brown bear, or the big lion of Africa. Enjoy it, the p14/17 are good rifles!

yup sounds like a P17. I have one also. I just had it built on a Remington P17 action. had the trigger lightened to about 3.5lbs, glass bedded, double bolted, floated 26" barrel, added .5lb lead in forend, 15oz mercury recoil reducer in stock and it is topped with a leupold 2-7X. I am working on making it accurate since the present bullets I am using shoot terrible. (light bullets which land far from the lands). not really sure on which bullet to use yet. would be nice to find an affordable roundnose bullet in the 450gr range.

I also have a 17 in 06 and would love to have it altered to a big bore. What is required? Is it all to be done by a Gunsmith? Will I be able to use something like the 458 barrels offered by Midway? Thanks for any help.

frank,
yes it has to go to a gun smith. he had to remove the old barrel and put on a new one, chamber the new barrel, open up the face of the bolt to take a 458 case, work on the magazine to take and feed the new case. these are just the big picture things that needed to be done. but well worth it.
