I finally made up a sizer for my Lyman 500 gr boolits, and ran them over 80, 82 and 84 gr of Varget. The 82 gr looked best, with two in one hole and a flier 1" out, this at 50yds with irons. I have a bedding problem which should tighten up the groups.

While the bullet has a nice bluff profile, I'm thinking about chucking the mold in the lathe and running a 3/8" endmill in to make a meplat, and then transition the meplat to the rest of the ogive with a form tool. Shouldn't pick up much weight ~20 grs, and I muchly prefer a flat faced cast bullet. Methinks 520-530 gr @ 2100-2200 should be just about right Big Grin

Wheelweights and water quenched for hardness. Lemme know if you want to try some when you get your Lott. I'm in ER also.

I am going to start casting soon. I have another 130 pounds of Lyman #2 due in shorty. That gives me 300 pounds. Now that I assured myself of a alloy supply for a few years I will invest in the furnace and sizer and moulds. I'll be casting for the 44 mag, 500 S&W, maybe 375 H&H and the Lott when its finished.

Paul,

What lube are you using? I have had good luck with LBT Blue.

Paul: Dunno which mould you are using, but why not just find yourself a Lyman 462560? It drops a bullt of about 550 grains with a veritable hammer of a meplat. I think if I owned that mould I would have to buy a Lott to go with it!

Just dug up an example of this slug that someone gave me. Weight is 553 grains with gas check and lube. Meplat is about .315.

The lube I used is home made moly/lithium greese and beeswax. It is a soft somewhat messy lube, but has also provided outstanding accuracy, and is easy to make. I like softer lubes, especially at low temps.

I'd love to get one of the heavy lyman molds, but to my knowledge they are no longer made. Saeco also offers a similar over 500 gr mold. I believe the mold I have is 458406. I looked at the mold and realized if I flatpoint it, I'll likely mess up the feeding, so it'll stay as is.

Just an update, I chronoed the 500 gr cast loads over 82 gr Varget and they clocked 2250 fps. I think I still have a bedding problem, but it's grouping a bit over 1" for 3 shots at 50 yds, not too bad for irons.
