MJines I would rather have the ugliest and the heaviest rifle as long as it works 100% and has the right bore and horsepower. 18"/22" barrel, .585"< 10-15000 fp. of energy would do. I don't give a fuck about the wood (colour, beautyfull fine totally useless checkering or the traditional lines, finish or shine). As long as it is a steel reinforced strong wood stock, that fits. I'll have the performance of a well made Double in 45+cal over a noisy plastic push-feed magnum Magnum any day of the week (plus nights if required) for hunting Big game in Jesse and double that if in early season Jesse.  | |||

I'll continue drooling over the GORGEOUS .404 bolt rifle, but when it's time to go hunting in the morning up in "the Valley"....I'll pick up the H&H double. IMHO: # 2 is a "Stunt-gun". Perfect choice for someone who wants to do a "Stunt-hunt". I suspect it was built by JD Jones simply "because he could". I like JD, and recognize his many contributions...but that POS ain't one of them. | |||

Oh don't worry the 404 will be going again in June, even if it's braced up with a lowly Heym double. If I had the H&H it would be first thing in the tuff pack. | |||

To answer Mike's question I'd take the 404 just because of its greater versatility than the other two. The barrel length to me is not much of an issue. I have 19.5"-24" on my DGRs and I like them all. Mark MARK H. I would take the H&H double sell it and buy the 404 Jeffery...pocket the differnece and put towards a deposit for a Safari. The other rifle (585?) I would not even remotely consider for anything.... | |||

If one wants to put up the money I'll gladly take all three and test them out on differant animals. Then give you my first hand report on what one worked the best.  I did vote for the 404 if it matters long barrel bolt guns hang really nice for off hand shots. Plus I perfer scopes for my not so perect eyes. | |||

Well, Mike, I have taken #3 to hunt elephant and buffalo. The 500/450 I took is mine,bought in South Africa in 1986, and the story of elephant is in the DGJ Vol XIII, no. 4 and Vol XIV, No. 1. It had much earlier done the work on my first buffalo hunt in the Mana Pools area. As for No. 1 & 2, apart from using that clunky invention of Mr. Mauser, #2 hasthe most heinous contraption to have afield, a muzzle break! The .404 is, at least, a handsome rifle, but a 450/400 would be even more so -- and give the useful two very quick shots. Regards, Tim | |||

I voted on the double, one would be crazy to not take it..you could re-sell it and buy two of no. one and maybe 3 and a dozen of number 2.. I'd take the 404 for the simple reason that on any important hunt, and especially for dangerous game, it's always best to use a rifle that you are familiar with and shoot best. My experience with the .585 caliber has shown me that, with the possible exception of the .620 caliber slugs in proper bullet configuration, i.e. CEB or GSC, the .585's can't be beat for the big boys. Plus, that particular Nyati is just a perfect rifle for Jess or Mopane DG hunts. Sorry I have been absent, gents, but, health issues have kept me down for a bit. Weight went from 245 to 176, but has now stabilized at a healthy 188. Respects, Phill | |||

I would argue the 500/450 is one of the best DR calibers, 480 gr bullet at 2100 fps with lower pressure then the 450 3.25. In fact, I sold a beautiful Holland 465 to buy this one. It has unlimited bullet selection from 300 to 500 grs, bottle neck case so it's easy to reload for and cases can be bought or made from 470 or 500 nitro cases. As for the 26" barrels, if you've handled a well balanced rifle with 26" tubes it's one of the best feeling rifles out there. As you can tell, I really like this rifle | |||

Maybe "one of" the best calibers but not THE BEST caliber! That being reserved to the 500NE!!  570gr bullet at 2150!! A significant step up in frontal area and energy without a significant step up in recoil or rifle weight! | |||
