I test fired my ~8.5lb 416 Taylor today, and was pleasantly surprised by the recoil level -- it didn't seem that different from any other belted mags I've fired. I'm sure the thick Decelerator had something to do with that, although I do have a nice bruise developing on my shoulder! I was using 68 grains of RL-15 with the Hornady 400's, which gave Saeed's test rifle about 2275fps. The sights (Dakota single/fixed rear blade, NECG masterpiece front with "partridge" bead) were pretty close; dead center and 2" high at 25 yards -- unfortunately, I got rained out before I made it to 50 and 100. So, what group size at 50 yards would be considered acceptable for a open sighted DGR? Best to all,

Hi Todd, I would expect that anything 2" or under at 50 yds with iron sights would be adequate for dangerous game; however, there are many here more experienced than I am regarding this so if they tell you something different, then I'd listen to them. What is your rifle--action, barrel, stock, etc.? Mine should be finished by the end of the month. It's a 98 Mauser with a 23.5" Douglas barrel, NECG Masterpiece front and rear sights, barrel-banded sling swivel, Warne QD rings and a Leupold 1-4X. I special ordered a Bell and Carlson stock with an aluminum bedding block to put on it. Now you've really got me antsy to get mine and shoot it. I'm anxious to see how it compares to my 416 Rigby--which will grow into a 450 Rigby as soon as the Taylor is finished. Good Hunting, ------------------

ACR, I used a VZ-24 w/ hinged bottom metal, A&B barrel (left at 24"), and a semi-classic style english walnut stock. It will eventually get a Leupold scope, either the 1.5-5x or the 2.5x. I couldn't be more pleased with looks or performance so far. I'm sure you'll enjoy yours -- I will be interested to see what you think of the Taylor after having first owned the Rigby. Todd

Todd, In the for what it's worth department. Ballistics explorer sayes that a Hornady 400 grain bullet at 2275 fps that is 2" high at 25 yards is 5.06" high at 50 yards and 9.74" high at 100 yards. It is 12.30" high at 150 yards and dead on at 326 yards. In order to be dead on at 100 yards you need to be .43" low at 25 yards. Steve ------------------

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Todd Getzen: Hi Todd, Good to see your project is down to the final steps. The accuracy mentioned at 2 inches minus at 50yds is good enough for hunting. I figure that my front sight bead on my 470 covers five inches of the target at 100 yds. It's a matter of seeing the same sight picture each time. When hunting it's a matter of concentration on a single small spot and squeeze. 470 Mbogo

Todd: Whose hinged bottom metal did you use? I have one coming on a Vz24 as well, with 25-inch Pac-Nor stainless barrel on a Bell and Carlson special order stock, black on tan spider webbing. I am looking for Argentine 1909 metal, as I want something sturdier than the aluminum ones but not as expensive as the full custom jobs.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by Todd Getzen: Todd have you got any pictures of your finished gun. At 8.5 lbs. it's going to be one handy rifle. My Taylor weighs in at 9lbs with scope and is great to take out. 470 Mbogo
