I posted this in the classifieds section as well. Financial considerations may neccesitate the sale of my custom 416 Rem. I was wondering what I could expect to get. It is built on a Bauska action, 22" douglas #5 barrel, easily achieves 2450 with any 400 grainer and is capable of groups of less than an inch. Magazine holds 5 rounds with enough room to load a 6th in chamber. The magazine is 3.85" long. I seat my Bridger 400gr solids out to 3.80". Very well executed Dakota 1/4 rib with cape outfitters 3 leaf sights. NECG banded sling swivel and masterpeice front sight with fine brass and flip up large white bead. The sight components and sling swivel band are soldered securely to barrel. Warne QD rings mated to machined double square bridges. Old mounting holes are filled nicely. Mcmillain (I think) fiberglass stock 14" length of pull with Decelerator pad installed. I recently painted stock a Sahara tan color. If I remember right the whole rig weighs less than 9 lbs with a 1-4 Leupold installed. The metal is freshly blued. Feeding is great with spitzer type bullets but it needs a little work to feed reliably with RN bullets and the Bridger flat point solids. If I sold the rig, a set of Lee dies, alot of brass, and a bunch of Hornady RN and Bridger #3 solids come with it. I realize some photos would be helpful but I can't post them. Just to guess, what would it be worth?

Sounds like the rifle is nicely executed, but a couple of things are going to hurt you. First, unless a famous name maker built the gun, you will probably get less than a used Dakota brings. Second, the fiberglass stock will be a negative with most buyers except the Alaska crowd. With a very nice wood stock, if the gun were what I am imagining, you might might might get $5K, but probably $3500 to $4K. Without the wood....bad news. I think it will be hard to top $3K simply because there are fewer people in love with fiberglass than wood, and it will cost at least $2K for a properly done stock. Just my opinion. If you want the opinion of a professional, take some pictures of the gun and send them to Champlinarms.com to see if they would consign the gun for you, and what they would expect the sale price to be. That's probably the premier location to sell used African hunting rifles in the USA.

Basically, I think you will be lucky to get $2500 for it. There is just too much competition for .416 Rem's out there. There are enough M70's, CZ550,s and even M700's to choose from a far lower costs. the guy who will spend $4K-$7K on a DGR typically wants a exotic action, a name barrel and super nice wood, of course all produced by a name gunsmith. The fact that these guns usually don't feed and may or may not be accurate is of secondary importance unfortunately. That's just my opinion and I hope I'm wrong!-Rob

Wildcatter, I currently having a similar gun built, on a new Brno ZKK 602 action. 24" LW Barrel, NECG Masterpiece front and rear sights, McMillan Express Stock, Barrel band, 3 position safety, in 404 Dakota. I will be out around $1900.00, plus the $400. I already spent for the donor action, and $100.00 for dies, for a grand total of $2400.00. (bullets and brass would add another $200.00) For a used rifle like you describe, I'd guess I'd pay in the $1600.00 to $2000.00 range. Good luck, Bob

Wildcatter, Now let me think! $450.00 seems like a fair price and I'll pay the shipping. You will kick your butt if you sell that rifle. I am familiar with the rifle and can make a guess as to how much you have into it. If you break even you'll be doing well. People are not looking for Bouskas as I know only too well. Keep the rifle and take out a loan if you need money. In a couple of years you'll be glad you still have it. Regards, Mark

I am of the opinnion that the gun would fetch $1500 to $1800 max..Used Custom rifles are not a good investment by any means, just pick up a Gunlist and look at the resale value on them...and those are asking prices... I have bought some of the very finest of Custom rifles for $1000 to $2000. and they wood in blank form alone on some of them probably cost that much. The other thing is when someone buys a custom rifle it was made for someone else and LOP etc. may not fit most and that limits your market in some cases... I love Custom Rifles but if you invest in one KEEP IT..or buy someone elses cheap as dirt and try to make a few bucks off them..
