Seems like everyone has one these days:-)
I am just curious as to how many of you fellow madmen own one? What action is it buildt on etc. Have you developed any interesting loads?
Also, has anyone tried it for hunting?

Rune, How is your 585 doing? As you know my 577 T.Rex. is built on a BBK-02 action. No I have not hunted with it. I have developed many interesting loads for it, for example.
193.0 H4831 650gr. Woodleigh
182.0 Vn560 750gr. Woodleigh
173.0 Rl.25 900gr. Woodleigh

All of the above loads will shoot one hole groups at 100 Yards if I do my part.

Hello Mitch!
We are doing very well thank you:-)
I have also found the nyati to be very accurate, I have no scope so one hole groups are very rare. Do you know if the 900 gr. bullets are offered for sale now for the general public?

I have a 585 nyati and 140.0 IMR 4350 works fine with 750 grain TCCI solids, Woodleigh solids or softs, or Hawk softs. The Woodleigh solids develop the highest pressure.

500grains,
What velocities have you gotten with the 750 grainers? And have you tried the Barnes solids. I just got a box of them. Will start to develop data with them soon:-)

Rune,

I have gotten up to 2350 fps but I do not want to go higher.

I have tried Barnes solids, but I like TCCI's much better. On the Barnes solids I have, the cannelures are inconsistent, so I have to set the crimp separately for each cartridge. The TCCI's are consistent and better finished than the Barnes.

Rune, The 900 Grain Woodleighs are a special order item not yet available to the public. They are a fabulous bullet very accurate in my rifle. But recoil can be fierce if you try and turn the velocity up on them.

500grains, I agree! No need to go higher. Where do you buy the TCCI bullets?

Mitch, what is the price on the 900 grainers on special order. Is it possible, lets say for some of us 585 people on this forum to team up and place a big order? Any interest?

Rune,

I would go in on a 2nd order of 900 grain Woodleighs. The ones I have are softs. I wonder if they would make us up a batch of solids.

I have only shot the 900 grainers up to 1879 fps and it feels like getting hit with a sledgehammer.

TCCI solids may be purchased from Huntingtons. See the link.

http://www.huntingtons.com/Bullet-TCCI.html

I think they cost me $77 for a box of 50.

Hawks are still the cheapest for practice rounds.

If they are braked and have any other recoil aids have you been able to figure out what the actual recoil is in ft. lbs.and in recoil velocity in ft.sec. My 500 A-Square weighs in at 10.5 lbs. without any brake etc and it takes some adjusting to get used to. With a 600 grain bullet at 2400-2425 fps off the bench it's pretty stiff. The recoil is in the 110 ft.lbs range. I was curious how they would compare.
Thanks 470 Mbogo

470 Mbogo, my rifle is about 11 lbs with no brake. I have fired a 750gr. woodliegh sn. at 2530 fps. According to huntamericas recoil calculator that gives 192 fotpounds of recoil and a recoil velocity of 33 feet per second. Have done this twice, don't care to repeat the feat:-)

Rune,

One would think you'd have learned after the first shot Almost ranks up there with Walter shooting his finger with an air pistol on 4 different occasions.

So how is your winter? Ours has been a non winter for the last month, with temps +/- 2 C, but have finally turned back to winter with it -15 C this morning. If only we'd get some fresh snow to ski on!

Paul H, well I could not back down since I was not alone at the range and nobody else would try:-)
We have very little snow so far, but it has been very cold lately. Temprature has been between -20 and -35.c for quite some time now.

I am not sure about the T-Rex, but I think Mitch once said it holds about 212 grains of water. Could be wrong tough. As for the Nyati I have seen different claims as to the water capacity. According to my weight it holds 184 grains of water.

Rune, I have a lot of 900 grainers right now. But it is a good idea to get a few of the 585 owners together and buy them in bulk. I have A-Square brass and Brass made by Horneber. The A-Square brass is heavier and holds 212 grs. of water the Horneber brass is lighter and holds 225 grs. of water.

Huntingtons is going to stock Horneber brass in various calibers (including 500 jeff), but they told me Horeber does not want to make 585 nyati brass.

The 900 grain Woodleighs I have are flat nosed. I would like it if Woodleigh made a 900 grain flat nosed solid.

500grains, Can't we just ask them to make some 900gr. flatnosed solids?

Rune,

Yes. Although all other Woodleigh solids are round nose.

Last batch of 900 grains, I think we paid a little over $1 US per bullet, but that was because they were blems and Woodleigh basically sold them at cost. I think we are looking at US $2-3 per bullet for 900 grain solids, assuming we have enough for a minimum order.

As I understand it, a minimum order is 5000 bullets, unless Karl G. steps in on our behalf.

Gents,
Got my 585 a few weeks ago, finally. Sorry I have not been in touch Mitch (Was waiting until I can back onto the work computers where my regular server is).
Gunsmith loaded 155gn of Ar2209(a bit faster than IMR4831) behind the 750gn wooldiegh softs for 2340fps.

My rifle weighs 18lbs on carbon kevlar target style stock, CZ550 action. 3.06" case length nyati. I think it falls short of Mitches T.Rex by about 10-15gns capacity depending on brass.
Muzzelbrake matches profile of 1 3/8" barrel and is about 4 inches long. Cuts recoil from heavy back to ...375 H&H win mag (sounds cliche).

Anyway, as soon as I can load a few of the 900 grain bullets and test them on game for woodleigh,I will then ask him for the next order.Minimum order of 500 bullets should still be okay, or more if needed.

Regards,
karl.
