Why did I answer?

You now have heard from the guru himself!

I've seen Roger's gun and it is truly amazing! While a few simple modifications will work, Roger did all kind of cool stuff with his! I wish he'd post a picture and description of what he did. What an interesting and beautiful rifle!

I converted one, pretty much by myself (a dangerous, dangerous operation). I did it in stages, going from .45/70 to .45/90 to .45 RCBS, then .450 N.E. No big problems at all in doing so.

If you are converting the standard model, it will kick like crazy. Also, make sure that the bedding is done properly. While I never had a problem with the stock, I understand that it split at the wrist some time after I sold it (a problem that I believe might well have been avoided if I (or my successor) had strengthed the area).

A No. 1 does just fine in .458 Lott (albeit in the heavy version). Just remember that your rifle will weigh a pound or so less and it will get your attention. I'd keep my loads to 2100 fps or so with 480 grain bullets. JMHO!

The Ruger No.1 is easily adapted to larger cartridges. Modifications are minor and are generally limited to the extractor and deepening the loading trough in the receiver and the top of the breechblock. The extractor can be modified to fit the larger rim or a suitable factory part obtained for about $12. Modifications to the breech block and receiver are necessary to clear the large diameter rim and permit easy loading & ejection.

My personal hunting rifle is a Ruger chambered for .450/400-3". It has a Krieger barrel,is quite accurate, and was also used to good effect in Zimbabwe to take two buffalo and plains game. A converted Ruger is reliable, fun to shoot, and perhaps the most economical way to acquire a rifle chambered for a classic NE cartridge.

kude, I have the 45-70 converted Ruger the Judge did up, and only had to have it throathed a little to shoot the Postellier type slugs, never had a problem with the butt stock other then it worked loose, and a spilt was found in the stock which was repaired, it does BREAK SCOPES tho, have been through 2 Leo's and one Weaver so far,, as long as I keep the loads down around 1850-1900FPS, its not to bad on recoil, any load with the 550 grain HammerHead bullet and the majic 2000FPS area, and it begans to hurt most ricky-tick, I think the 45-70 bbl is just to light for caliber, makes a great carry rifle tho
