HI GUYS !
THIS IS MY FIRST POST ON THIS BOARD I JUST DISCOVERED! LAST WEEK I BOUGHT A BRNO BOLT ACTION CARABINE IN 358 NORMA MAGNUM. WHAT KIND OF GAME WOULD THIS QUALIFY FOR? WOULD IT BE A GOOD IDEA TO SCOPE THIS RIFLE? IS COMMERCIAL AMMO STILL AVAILABLE?
THX IN ADVANCE!
BEST REGARDS, A

RoadKillGroumet,
The 358 Norma Magnum is an excellent caliber and could be compared to the 338 Win Mag with heavy bullets. The only thing that held in back in the past was the availability of good bullets and the introduction of the 338 Win.Mag which won the popularity game. With so many good quality bullets from 180 to 300 gr now available it is truely an excellent cartridge. Norma was putting out loaded ammo last time I checked but that may have changed. They still produce brass which allows you to use the wide range of quality bullets that are manufactured for it.

It is a good long range hunting rifle that can handle anything up to dangerous game in Africa which the laws of most countries require the 375 or better. It should have a good quality 1x5, 1.5x6, 2x7, 3x9 or similar powered scope on it. The 358 Norma Mag would be an excellent round for moose, elk and the big bears of the world.

Good Hunting,
Steve

If it really is a carbine ie short barrel length then be carefull of your ears. I would reckon you could produce enough noise to immediately permananently damage your hearing firing a short barreled full length magnum cartridge without ear protection.

Norma is still loading the .358. Take a look at www.norma.cc

"Carabine" is the french word for rifle, isnt it? I think you have a barrel of about 60 cm.

For all practical purposes it is very close to a 375 H&H in killing power, perhaps a bit better than the 338 Win., maybe....I put a lot of faith in bullet cross-section on big stuff up close.

A carbine lenth barrel could limit the effective somewhat...

Hi Andre!
First of all Congratulations to an excellent rifle(at least in my eyes)!
If you have an original BRNO stock of the German type Choose a scope with lot of space in between the scope and your eye otherwise it can easily bite you.If you have that and don't like the recoil change stock and it will not bite you anymore and be pleasant as any other rifle to shoot with.Norma in Sweden produce Commercial ammo to it.
Just choose any game that you want and good hunt to you!

the 358 Norma is just a tad less powerful than the .375 H&H, that said it is for big game just this side of elephant.

You mention yours is a Carbine. I would start off with reduced loads if I were you until you get used to the muzzle blast and recoil. It is a lot of cartidge for a short rifle.

You have a great rifle there! The flip-up backsight is a great asset (wish I could have found an older Brno action with this for myself!).

You can use any .357 revolver bullet, so you have one of the widest range of bullet masses available in any calibre: 110gr to 310grains. The pistol bullet make for cheap practice (or you can drive these bullets intended for 1200fps at over 3100fps for a "where did it go?" varmint load. The 310 gr Woodleigh's will do in any critter this side of an elephant (if it were legal).

Just make sure you use bullets which can stand up to the high velocity -- that ain't no .358 Win you are shooting there!

I love my 358 Norma. I break 3000 fps with 225 gr bullets and 2700 fps with 275 gr bullets 24" barrel. the 310 Wooodliegh solid will kill elephants " super SD." shoots as flat as a 270 win and hits like a 375 HH. and at that price it was a steal. enjoy.
