Folks, I would like to put an m-70 style safety on my 602 soon to be .585 to replace the back ass job on it. However the asking price is $350 AUS which I think is stiff. Anyone know of cheaper prices or were second hand ones may be found.

PC, I think that's what they go for and/or is a good deal. They are usually ~150 US plus shipping. Let us know if you find a better deal Jeffe

Well jeffeso that adds up, 150 US equates to about $300 Aus and the importer wacks on 50 bucks. Is it a big job to fit one, I mean can it be something that is added down the track when funds become available??

PC, i can be simple, or a chore. I would suggest having a gunsmith at least look at it. other than that, the beuhler safeties are a nice, and very much cheaper. jeffe

Jeffeso were do you get a behuler safety & how much. Remeber I am in Australia we are 20 years behind the rest of the world Jeffesso do you think bolt Jewelling is also a worthwhile activity ??

Pc, they are http://www.brownells.com/Product/index.asp and direct cheap. No where near as good as a 3 pos... bolt jewelling? If you like it, great, if you don't, don't spend the money. jeffe

So Jeffeso you do not feel bolt jewelling offers any advantages as far as slickness of bolt etc. go?? Thanks for the link

[QUOTE]Originally posted by PC: Hi PC, Jewelling of the bolt should make it work smoother. It will hold lubricant better which should also help to make it operate smoother. The three position safety that you were asking about is made by Precise Metalsmithing Enterprises Inc at www.precisemetalsmithing.com There is some gunsmithing involved to instal the safety. You have to cut in a 30 degree angle to match the wing safety. Actually there is a ten step proceedure that comes with the safety. 470 Mbogo

Are the 3 position safety and jewelling things that I could do to the rifle down the track?? All I have to pay for now is screwing it to gether and the stock I am getting built. Barrel, action, dies etc., brass, Mercury recoil reducers, reamer, mounts & scope all paid for. So cash will be short until next year.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by PC Hi PC, They are both things you can do down the road. If you go for the PME 3 position safety it has a piece that fits in and sort of fills the hole that your old safety removal would leave. You can get your bolt jewelled any time also. You will definately need some gunsmithing for the safety though. 470 Mbogo

Thanks 470 and Jeffeso, what I might do is get the gun finished and then in a couple of years have another crack at it and get the nice african extra's added. That includes a nice express sight etc. I will put some Rem irons on in the mean time now if I fit these will they leave a mark that can not be covered if I add a single Island express sight set up in the future??

Bolt jeweling is like a chrome bumper - flashy but useless. Just polish the bolt and rails and they will be slicker. Personally I prefere Buehler safeties over Model 70 safeties.

PC, IIRC, it cost about $400 by the time I bought the PME 3-position safety, the machining fixture, and paid the gunsmith to install it on my BRNO ZKK 602 in 510 JAB It is well worth it to replace the bassackwards 602 safety, which can get you killed. It will also result in a far nicer rifle than any old M-70, which I also dearly love, but after all, you are talking 585 Nyati, eh?

Yeah the 3 pos safety will have to wait a little. If I put rem sigts on in the mean time due to not being able to afford express jobs when I add the express setu later will they cover all he holes of the rem sights, can the same holes be used do you think???

PC, No way to say unless you know the hole spacing on both sights, etc. My dollars are U.S., so the PME safety is pretty expensive, but not needed until you are in DGR mode. Ditto the express sights. If it were me, I would just slap some Remington sights on it and go shooting. Put the finishing touches on later.

You have convinced me gents, lets be realistic here I am not hunting buff or elephants, just pigs, camels and donkey's etc. The rem sights will suffice for them as back up to the 2.5 compact leupold I have purchased. I will however be spending an extra few pennies to fit three .585's in the mag. Follower needs a little tweaking I think. [ 06-22-2002, 17:39: Message edited by: PC ]

When I have finished it I'll see if I can get a digital camera and post some pics of it. Ray will vomit as it will have a composite stock and stainless barrel, I am thinking of nickel coating the action and barrel and all metal. I am also having a stock in the....wait for it....weatherby style because they feel comfortable to me and it works on my .416 Rigby.

I suppose us younger shooters have been bought with synthetic stainless and to me rifles just look good and practical in this disguise.
