Peeps on double rifles? Login/Join

This has probably come up and I have just missed it, but has anyone ever seen or used a peep sight on a double rifle? I realize that the usual double rifle rear sight is typically a bit more forward than is optimal for peep use, but with it being so fast and everything, it seems a good, stout ghost ring would be a practical arrangement on a double, whether smokeless or muzzleloading, and probably an improvement on the shallow V.

A nice peep sight can be combined with the top lever screw..Remove the screw and replace with a screw in peep-sight...A good gunsmith can make one and it works real well. You can even encorporate windage, no biggie...I considered marketing such a sight at one time but decided there was not enough doubles out there and if it flew some big conglomerate would make them cheaper....

I always thought that is would be a freat idea put you don't see it. If I were going to spent the money on a good double I think I would have them put a peep site on for back up to a good low powered scope.

Bill/Oregon,
I agree with the peep on doubles. Problem is I can't afford them other than an over/under Ruger Redlabel converted to .338 Win. Mag rifle.
I do have a 10 guage side by side shotgun that I have converted to 24" barrels of cylinder bore (by hack saw) with a peep rear sight and a bead-on-blade front sight. I have hunted doves with that just for kicks. It will also handle the 3.5" slugs (Foster style) to within a 6" four shot group at 50 yards. Handles buck shot well. A poor man's double rifle simulator/plinker. Hacking 32" down to 24" took 1.5 lbs. off the piece, which now weighs 10.5 lbs. Fun.

Recknagel makes a peep sight that kan be used in a double rifle with claw mount. However, even though european double rifles are often equipped with claw mounted scopes, these peeps are rather rare in use. You can see some types at http://home.snafu.de/l.moeller/Iriskimme.html (For those reading german there is a lot of interesting stuff at that page. But I do really not share the opinions about shooting at that site.)

Vielen Dank, Fritz! The Recknagel peep for the Rugers looks an awful lot like the NEGC. It is a wee bit bulky for my taste, but it probably works great. Ray, what did your design look like?

Bill I just took the screw and tiged a small block on it and dovetailed the block and made a peep for it and screwed it back in...I used a .700 New England Arms partridge front sight and filed it down for elevation...Jim Brockman could make you one. 208-934-5050..or Jack Belk, 208-543-4869
