You can neck down .458WM or as I do neck up .338WM. I liked the idea of the taylor because there isn't a lot of difference in velocity of the Rigby, but brass is a heck of a lot cheaper. Also as you can see, I didn't have to get picky about what action I could fit it into, although I wanted a Savage action anyway. Dare to be different.

Correct you are! The Taylor is indeed the 458 necked down. As Ross S. mentioned, the Taylor is a good use of 458 brass!
I totally expect to get flamed for this; however, let it be known that I also own a very nice 458... so it's ok for me to say!

Interesting that there are so many Taylors -- not bad for a wildcat. Someone should have made it a factory round (A-Square doesn't count IMO!).

I think this caliber is the upper limit of practicality in the short belted case.

On this forum since I have been on it I do not really here anything good about the old .458 Win Mag, it gets bagged quite a bit. Brass is probably only good for the .416 taylor.

I have a 416 Howell. 404 Jeff brass cut down. to fit a standard action. Leupold 1.4X5, talley rins and mounts NECG front sight McMillian Stock.

I have 317 cases of 416 Rigby, RCBS Dies, & Lee Factory Crimping die.

I also have 1,000 of the 400 gr. Midsouth's blems, 200 Hornady 400 gr. softs, & 50 400 gr. GS FN solids.

And finally, I have no gun. So what does that make me other than optimistic.

I did have a Ruger Express in .416 Rigby until a friend talked me out of it. Now I have a Belgium commercial Mauser 98 in .416 Rigby - yes, it is a standard length action!

I think the person that helped make the 416 Rigby name had his 416 rigby on the standard M98 action.

Harry Selby and others? Just don't load it to 416 Weatherby ballistics. This is another reason why the 416 Rigby beats the 404 Jeffery hands down. If you want a trim M98 instead of the BIGMagnum action, it can be done.

Myself and a couple of mates are now moving to big cases loaded back.

One mate has ordered a 25 Ultra reamer from Dave Manson with removable pilot to do a 6.5 Ultra, which will be to replace his 264s. Loaded to max 264 ballistics, the 6.5 Ultra will have very wide loading parameters, almost from black powder up.

Since I wont get my 416 bullet making gear until December, I have made up a little jig to file down some 350 grain Speers to about 300 grains. Within the next couple of weeks I will have those at about 2500 or 2600 with 85 grains of 2206 (3031 burn rate) in 416 Wby. In short, 375 power while in idle mode.

I have a .416 Wby Magnum, and the rifle is a laminated stock built around the ususal Mark V action,with open sights and Douglas barrel,,26".
This "rifle rocks"!

I counted Longbob for 416 Rigby because he had cases, bullets and dies etc.

Can't count you so unfortunately the 416 Wby is still limited to 4 of us. Interesting that only one American owned 416 Wby, although I know Mitch has a 416 Wby.

So far....Interesting that there are only 13 416 Rems but 12 wildcat 416s. Of 57 guns 28 of them are the 416 Rigby. The 416 must be the only bore size where the real standard version, in this case the 416 Rem is so outnumbered.

I was thinking of the 416 Rem as being the standard as it is in both Rem 700 and M70 rifles.

I reckon in Australia the breakup would look similar except 416 Rem would be further down and the 416 Taylor would be further up.

My guess is the 416 Rem is down for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, like the 375 H&H it has the disadvantage of needing the longer action (so conversion of M70 338s etc is more difficult) but unlike the 375 H&H it lacks appeal, so many people are happy to go the easy way with the 416 Taylor. But 375 Taylors would be real thin on the ground as a percenatge of 375 bore size rifles.

Secondly, its "home chambering", that is the Rem 700 does not go with the caliber. Interesting of 13 416 Rems on this thread only one is a Rem 700 and that is a rebarreled Sendero.

416 Wbys are also way down in Australia and that is indoubtedly a combination of two things. One being that people would either choose the 378 as being the biggest of the high velocity calibers or choose the 460 as just being the biggest. The other problem of course is the lack of Hornady type bullets in 416.

I think now with the cz 550 .416 Rigby the .416 bore will become much more popular in Australia. And will become the standard along with the .375 H&H for the bloke who wants a "big bore rifle" to show there mates.

I do not include the .458 win mag in the above as I do not see it a big bore until it's transferred to the lott or ackely. I see the .458 win mag as a 45/70 on steroids.
