Well, that went over about like a turd in the puchbowl. Typical I guess. I didnt ask for your opinion on "skill" or ethics, just gave some background. You hunt your way and I will continue to hunt mine. Getting close is not a problem, I have probably killed more game at 20 yards than I have at 200. This is just a different aspect of the same old game.
Back to the original question for those that MIGHT want to actually add something positive. What caliber, 338 RUM or 375 RUM would have the most retained energy and velocity at 1000 yards assuming close to equal bullet weights are compared?

I think this one falls under the pronouncement my Mother made: if I didn't have anything nice to say I was not to speak.

With that said, for me hunting is about getting closer.

There was a thread on I believe the big game forum about long range shooting at game, with some good info, and heated debate.

The response you'll likely get here is, the 338 and 375 are medium bores.

More to the point, if you are serious about this, then you won't use a factory rifle, as they aren't accurate enough, and their barrels are too short to get the potential from the large cased magnums. The 338 is the better choice simply because there is a better selection of bullets for that application.

If you are talking about big game, then in my opinion you should be looking at the 50 BMG in order to have enough punch left at 1000+ yards to take game.

Remember that the 1000 yard target shooting game arose from military training, and the only thing that the military cares about at 1000 yards is to wound a person and create a burden on the enemy forces. But taking game cleanly is a totally different question.

Not another sniper wannabe! Why not use a motar! At least you have a decent chance at a clean kill! Sorry, but this really is offensive. Try developing the kill to get close enough to the game. What your doing is simply sniping, not hunting!

Is this guy serious? 1000+ yds? Like Rob said, how about actually hunting the game instead of playing shooter on the grassy knowle. Go to the target range and leave the poor animals alone!!! [Mad]
