Can someone please explain the differences between a side lock and box lock action outside of where the locking lugs are. I am more interested in, is one better than the other and why.

Thanks,

Chris

A box lock have the working parts cut into the inside of the action where as the side lock as the working parts attached to side plates. The side lock is surpose to be stronger because You do not have to cut as much of the action away to make room for the working parts. The these locks have nothing to do with how the action locks up the locking parts are differant all togather.

Tradionaly the Side Lock was supposed to be better
and is always found on the higher grade London guns. You could get "hand deattachable" side locks where each lock could be taken apart in the field and cleaned. Just to confuse matters, some makers also produced "budget"
side locks; I have a brno SxS shotgun which
fits in this catogary. In practical terms
I'm not that a good box lock is any less
reliable than a good sidelock but it certainly does not look as elegant!

CSJ,

Try looking at this site...

http://www.hallowellco.com/abbrevia.htm

It has the most comprehensive glossary on double rifles that I have found. Some of these definitions have photos to go along with them.

Take Care,

-Steve
