470 or 500, best resale value. 500/416 perhaps more useful and enjoyable to shoot in most situations. (Yes 500Grains I know its not a "STOPPER")

What Kevin said! I would add that factory ammo is more readily availble for the .470 (I belive Federal builds it) but I still think I will get the .500 when I win JohnTheGreek

To add to what Kevin stated, The 470 is Factory loaded by Kynoch and Federal. I find the recoil of my double is less than a M70 416 Rem Mag. Reloading components are readily available to include foam filler from Kynoch. When I win the double, going for a 9.3X74 Jim

Does Mr. Searcy regulate with Factory loads or with the ammo for sale on his site? I was thinking of the 500 NE also, because it's going to be expensive to feed no matter what, so I might as well get something unique if I win! Mike

quote:R,O,T,R, all the chamberings are good depending on what you will use the rifle for. If it will be used in the North American hunting fields, with maybe one trip to Africa, then the 375H&H Flanged would be my choice of the standard offerings! If, however it will be used mostly for Africa, and mostly on Buffalo, then my choice would be the 500NE first, then the 470NE These two rounds will make the rifle worth more if you ever decide to sell it, with the edge being to the 470NE, in price. If one wants the rifle to keep for the rest of his life, and wants something that is ENOUGH but still usable for general hunting any place, and you don't mind loading for it. A very well balanced, but not yet popular chambering would be the 500/416NE . Like the 375 H&H flanged, the selection of good bullets is almost as well regulated as for the 30-06, and is a good selection for that reason. Should I win this rifle, my choice will be the 500NE, but that is because I have sold off all my really big stoppers, and the Searcy 500NE will fill that bill quite nicely! quote:I think that Superior Ammo uses the exact same loads for their factory ammo that Mr. Searcy uses when regulating his rifles. Or you can load your own and Mr. Searcy will tell you the load that he uses for regulation. He told me the load that my 500 is regulated for and it regulates perfectly at 50 yards for me with that load.

Just pullin' you leg 500grains. You seem to be able to make your favorite point if a guy asks whether the 150 or 170 grain bullet is better in a 30-30!! I'm sure if you win that bore will be a half inch!

Sorry, I can only offer field experience in the 585 bore diameter. But I would advise against the 500 NE except for persons who consider themselves at either the advanced level or expert level in handling heavy recoil. My 500 NE is an absolute gem, but off the sandbags it starts to get brutal after 15 or 20 shots. One day I shot 34 rounds of 500 NE from the sandbags, 18 rounds of 458 lott from sandbags, and 39 rounds of 458 win mag from sandbags, and I was not good for any intellectual tasks for the remainder of the day. The 500NE doesn't give me a headache, but it shakes me up after a while. The 585 starts go give me a good headache after 15 rounds, but it is gentler on my shoulder than the 500 NE, probably due to the brake. [ 03-17-2003, 07:00: Message edited by: 500grains ]

quote:Yes, thank you for offering me the opportunity to point out that the 30-30 is not a stopper. Seriously, with shot placement I am sure they are all great. But when you stand 12 to 15 FEET from a buffalo while he stares at you and breathes quickly, recoil will not be a factor.
