Over past few months been buying up fair amount of ammunition for both the brass and just to store away for a rainy day and recently ended up with couple new boxes of Speer Nitrex w/ Gand Slam 285 grain bullets. Question is are they a good dependable bullet for I have opportunity to pick up several more boxes at well below current pricing. Anyone with experience of this brand/load?? All help appreciated.

I found some of that same ammo at a very good price. I have shot some at paper and found it very acc. out of my S.S. Mod 70.

Fired 1 shot at a whitetail here in northern Id. at about 100yds. the shot hit point of aim high on shoulder (Lower area was behind brush) the deer disappeared from sight. Walked over and the deer had not moved in any direction but down. The shot was a pass through that removed part of the backbone above the point of the shoulder. I know that this isn't very helpfull but I would buy more of that stuff just because it looks so great and was cheaper than brass.

dsiteman,

The GS is half way between a conventional bullet and a Nosler partition in performance.

I used them in 375 quite a bit on NA and exotic game.

(They shot to same poi as my 275 grain Bitterroots).

The front half is hard lead and rear soft lead, which is just the opposite of what Speer claimed in all their adds.

So it is slow to expand and shears off front end with the brittle lead but the thick semi partition insures there is some frontal area left over.

It is hard to ruin a 375 and you can hunt most NA critters with it just fine.

My first choice are both out of business, Bitterroot (retired) and North Fork (retired).

If going to Africa I would want a Swift, Kodiak (if available), TSX, Speer Trophy bonded, or Woodleigh in that order.

In conventional bullets the old WW Power Point is excellent (it has a thick copper coated brass jacket).

I wish that the Nitrex stuff was still in production, I found it shot well out of many of my rifles

While playing with a variety of bullets in a .375 H&H in order to get solids and softs to hit the same point of impact,I found out that 285 Speer Grand Slams with a Ken Water's prescription of Reloder 15 worked like a charm. I believe it would make a superior lion or kodiak load.

About 2 years ago, I got a good deal on 4 boxes of the 375 Nitrex ammo loaded with the 285 Grand Slams. The dealer had gotten it from a customer who sold his rifle. The ammo wouldn't hold a group in my rifle which I knew grouped well with Remingtons.

I pulled the bullets and found as much as 7 grains variance in the powder charge. I reweighed the charges using the reclaimed powder, reseated the bullets and it will now put 3 shots in 1 1/4."

I haven't used the GS bulletsw on any game yet, but it has a great reputation.

I've found the Speer Grand Slam bullet to be a very tough bullet but I could never get the accuracy I was after.

I have had great luck with them on Brown Bears and Finn Aagaard claimed they were his favorite soft nosed bullet for the 375.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

Again, thanks for the responses and am getting these for way less than retail and at today's prices, believe it is a bargain. I shoot a Ruger RSM in 375HH and will say the recoil on these particular loads seems to be a bit less than the Rem. factory stuff I have shot?? Accuracy is about 1" at 100 and truth of the matter have not found any loads that did not shoot very well in the RSM.

I use grand slam 225 gr and 250 gr in my 338 win mag.I have gotten 3/4" groups at 200 yards with it.I loaded a bunch of the .375 285 gr for a friend with a Ruger #1 in 375 H&H he shot 1" groups with it at 100 yards.I have had good luck with these bullets on game. They make bigger mushrooms than Nosler partitions and hold together pretty good. They might not hold up good in super speed .375s such as the 375 ultra mag or 378 weatherby.I dont use them in my 338-378 eather because they opened up too much up close. They are good bullets for a decient price.
