Yow! 62 grains of 4198 seems like a major overload with 500s in a .458 Win. Max that Hodgdon lists is 58.5 at 51000 psi.

No flattening of primers and no sticky bolt. Cases show no signs of over pressure. I tried 58 gr and 62 gr. Did not chrono them, but no field difference at all. Cobalt

Cobalt, In my Hodgdon reload manual is have as max load in .458 64 gr H4198 at 2072 fps with a 22" barrel. You'll have more velocity with other powders ------------------

I found IMR 4195 to be a tad faster than H4195. I think H4195 is closer to IMR 3031. Closer to 3031 than 4195. [This message has been edited by Colonel (edited 05-07-2002).]

I will repost this to you 458 winmag shooters. I was reading that Hodgdon Benchmark closely duplicates the burn rate of IMR-3031 with 3 significant differences. 1) Much finer granules (still extruded) 2) 8% more dense 3) Insensitive to temperature variations This seems to be the perfect powder for a 500gr bullet hunting load for the 458wm. Any thoughts? My 458 is having some fine tuning done on it and I plan to try this when I get it back from the shop. [This message has been edited by Ralph (edited 05-07-2002).]

Ralph, I will wait your comments about this new powder. I've a very nice 458 wm and I don't want to take it to Lott. Where in the internet can I buy Swift A-frames 450 gr? Thanks LG

<yorick> |
I get the 500 grainers going 2100 fps out of my 458 with 72 grains of VV N130. BMG and I were shooting these (and some rather zippy 400 grainers) in my Whitworth this weekend, it does get your attention....

Lorenzo, Another good source for shooting supplies is Midway. www.midwayusa.com Also when I ordered some of the Wipeout bore cleaner the fellow I talked (the owner I presume) told me he had good luck with Norma powders with the 458wm easily getting between 2100-2200fps(500gr bullets) with no pressure signs. I can't recall the exact powder number but I will try to find the note I made if anyone is interested. I haven't pursued this as I can't find any Norma powder in central Florida even at the gunshows.
