I wonder if anyone has put a black fore-end on a laminated stock? A stock with one foot in tradition for looks, and the other foot in technology for toughness, and which would truly protect the front end of the stock from bumps and bangs.

Other than whatever bowling balls are made of, does anyone have any knowledge of what would be a good high tech material to use?

BTW, exactly what a bowling balls made of?

I'll post the pictures tonight, they didn't turn out to great, but we'll see.

All I know is anything knife handle that has cracked has not been stabilized. It pretty much makes any natural material indestrucable, no swelling cracking, shrinking, scratching etc... Basically it will outlast any other part of your gun.

Frank, send me your address and I'll send you a finished cap that you can try. It'll be made to fit a handle with 1 1/4" rings. Just let me know black or burgandy.

Alan: Savage does so on their varmint stocks and Remington did and may still on theirs. You can see the look on their respective web sites. I don't know about Remington but the Savage tip is plastic, same as their Safari stock with the cross bolts. I just got a Richard's reject brown laminated Old Classic with an ebony tip so there's another.

Pictures didn't turn out great, but this gives you an idea. These have no finish on them and have had the crap beat out of them and have seen worse abuse then any gun would receive in 100 years. Neither have any finish or have had anything done to them for over 4 years of abuse and still look like new(I didn't even wipe them off before taking the pictures). Like I have said, no warping, shrinking, expanding cracking, finishing etc...Just turn it down, buff it with jewelers rouge and your good to go with no other attention required ever.
