I have been reading on Haralds web site about the splash effect and was thinking about wich caliber that make the biggest splash.?? A ultra fast .300 Magnum ( 165 grain SP premium bullet at 3800 FPS) or a big .600 Overkill ( 900 Grain SP bullet at 2450 FPS...??? The .600 OK sure have more energy but is the velocity really so much more important for the "splash effect" than the bullet weight. [Confused]

I have a suggestion for you.

Find a bridge over water.
Set up a video camera facing down into the water.
Jump into the water.

If you survive, repeat the process except this time, get in your car and drive off the bridge at 140kph.

Have a neighbor retrieve the video and tell us which made the bigger splash. [Roll Eyes]

OK, the big heavy round or flat nose bullet will win the splash effect contest every time IMHO [Smile]

To best simulate the famous wby 'splash affect' I suggest the following:

Take 4 volvos, have four guys drive the volvos at you at 40 mph.

Shoot with 300 Wby, aiming down the engine block, from the front.

Make sure the drivers are members of this forum, and are sick of your stupid questions [Wink]

Start shooting, with a bolt action rifle, at 40 yards...

If you manage to get out of the way, try it with a reasonable caliber DGR rifle.

Depends upon the "splash" medium.

Overkill,

I agree with other posts, but a big truck will be a better choice [Wink]

Sure the bigger bullet will make a bigger splash effect... but I was just thinking stupid...! [Wink]

But now after 3-4 years I understand one thing. When you shoot a animal then the pressure or energy "splash effect" will make a shock to the animals tissue lungs and heart and blood vessels. So the blood pressure stops to work for the aniaml and then it die. Wrong or what???

Yes, Overkill. YOU have managed to copy Roy W's party line, that, by the way, is a long way from the general opinions of all the guys that actually use their guns to shoot animals.

Once you get past a certain size, the gun required to shock an animal is too big, and heavy, to fire from your shoulder.

A BMG 50 fits in that category, except with todays wonder brakes, it is possible to use.

I too, think it would make a truly scary hunting round, and, even better, if you could get one into Africa, you might be able to go after certain poachers, and politicians from a safe distance.

However, this thought has occured to them, too, and they aren't real happy when you show up with a BMG based rifle.

I will say that the 50 BMG has always been one of my favorite rounds, as are the 308, 105 mm, and
45.

Suffice to say, that while it may not be hunting, the 750 grain 50 caliber BMG boat tail bullet has one of the best ballistic coefficents on the planet, and this makes it a great round for long range use. It also hits, at least in the 150-260 pound class, with devastating effect.

One shot kills are the norm, not the exception.

Out of a proper, 32 inch, to 40 inch barrel, it's just devastating, and recoil is strong, but brakeable, and, considering how slow the powder burns, it's not that bad, considering what you are putting out.

Ask Rob to build one for you. Plenty of bullets around, they want to make them illegal in Kalifornia and the US, so I see guys trying to dump rifles in 50, right and left. It's only a dollar a round for mil surplus ammo, if you can find it.

Forget those wildcats based on the 50. Stay with the original, proven round.
